Why is this a light rail system[edit]

The rolling stock looks totally like heavy rail to me.--Howchou (talk) 17:59, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I wondered about that too. My guesses:
  1. Maybe it was initially planned to be "Light rail" line as light rail is currently a more sexy term, and they stuck with the original name when it turned out the most affordable surplus vehicles were actually heavy rail?
  2. Even though the vehicles are capable of being operated at heavy rail capacities, maybe Lagos only plans to operate the system at a passenger capacity typical of light rail?
  3. Maybe, in Lagos service, the trains won't be run in subway length 6 vehicle train-sets? Maybe each vehicle will be operated separately, or in trainsets of just 2 vehicles?
Two vehicle trainsets would still provide a driver's booth at each end.
One of the new references I found said it was planned for trains to arrive every 5 minutes. Another said the Blue Line would carry 300,000 passengers per day. I think if they anticipate rush hours, with 300,000 passengers per day there would be heavy rail usage during rush hour. I wonder whether they plan to reduce some of the seats, to make for more standing room?
The Bloor-Danforth Line is almost the same length as the Blue Line, but has more than twice as many stations. At more than 2 km between stations I hope the Lagos passengers won't have to walk to the station.
This article seems to assume the former TTC vehicles will equip both the Blue Line and the Red Line. If the vehicles are only used on the Blue Line, and trains arrive every five minutes, and take half an hour per trip, an hour per round trip, the 255 vehicles would be insufficient to operate 6 train train-set as is done by the TTC -- particularly as some portion of the fleet would likely be undergoing repairs or routine maintenance. Maybe it would be enough to operate 4 train train-sets. If the vehicles were also used on the Red Line I would guess they plan to use 2 train train-sets.
If the plan is to only use 2 train or 4 train train-sets then they could make do with smaller stations. Presumably smaller stations would be slightly cheaper to construct. Geo Swan (talk) 05:25, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

After some research I propose that the article title and content be changed to "Lagos Rail Mass Transit". This is the name used by the government, the website [1] does not even mention "light rail". Throughout their site they refer to it as Urban Rail, or LRMT (Lagos Rail Mass Transit). Unless I am missing something, and given what others have said (station spacing, vehicles, etc.) I think it is clear that the system is going to be heavy rail transit, nothing like LR really.
