Was it really annexation?[edit]

Some references provide following information.

In 1975, 97% of the electorate in the Sikkim voted to merge with the India.[1] After this, Sikkim merged with India in 1975.[1][2][3]

I am trying to get more information and will post as I get. I think we should include this on the main page. What do you think? Asmith3000 (talk) 14:12, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here are some experts from the references. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Asmith3000 (talkcontribs) 15:31, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sikkim...become 22nd state of the Indian Union in May, 1975 as a result of a referendum by the people the people of Sikkim and an agreement signed between Chogyal Palden Thendup Namgyal, the then Maharaja of Sikkim and the government of India. >[4]

...real wave of a democratic movement and merger of Sikkim with India had its root in 1973 revolution when the popular forces favoured merger with India with referendum. [5]

A special opinion poll conducted by the Government of Sikkim on the 14th April, 1975 resulted a total of 59,637 votes in favour and 1,496 votes against the Resolution out of a total electorate of approximately 97,000 [6]

.[1] Asmith3000 (talk) 15:27, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Therefore, there was no annexation since Sikkim was a protectorate state of the Indian Union since 1950. Indian Union and Indian Union took responsibility of defense, foreign policy, communication, and transportation of the erstwhile Kingdom of Sikkim Asmith3000 (talk) 15:38, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Here is yet another reference. (After British rule ended and immediately after Indipendence of India) a treaty between Government of India and (erstwhile Kingdom of) Sikkim was signed under which India took the responsibility with regard to Sikkim's defence, external affairs, comunication netweork etc. ... (erstwhile Kingdom of) Sikkim became proctorate state of India...In May 1974, the Sikkim Congress decided to put an end to the monarchail rule and the Assembly passed the Government of Sikkim Act, 1974 for providing a responsible government and furthering its relations with India. [7] Asmith3000 (talk) 16:33, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

These references indicate that India had responsibility of defense, foreign policy, etc. of the erstwhile Kingdom of Sikkim. The Sikkemese Congress wanted to further relations with India. So, to establish law enforcement, India could have sent troops to Sikkim, and not to annex it. Therefore, I believe that the word "Annexation" is wrong.

"Takeover" can be a better word. What do you all think? Asmith3000 (talk) 18:10, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

See Talk:Indian annexation of Hyderabad where this issue was settle by an RfC. You should not reopen issues settled by RfC's without a good reason. That is considered disruptive.
You should also check the page on Annexation. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 22:28, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Kautilya3, Thanks for your comment. I see your point and agree to it. Asmith3000 (talk) 23:47, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Coat of arms[edit]

According to this page [1] before 1975, the motto on the coat of arms was different - OM MANI PADME HUM. (Oh, the jewel of creation is in the Lotus). Stop change to today's wrong version.
