Salary[edit]

Why "allegedly"?

"Muck served as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) from 1906 to 1908 and then again from 1912 to 1918, alledgedly with a yearly salary of 28,000 dollars."

28,000 is what the New York Times says. We don't modify any other of the paper's statements with "allegedly." I just can't tell what date the Times assigns to that salary. It looks like 1913 to me.

The NY Times article says:
Muck ... in 1913 accepted an offer of $28,000 a year to come to this country and lead the BSO.
How could they know about the amount? They don't name a source. Muck most certainly did not tell them. And the 1913 does not conform to Wikipedia's 1912 (which I have not double checked). Also I have no idea whether the 28,000 are plausible or not.
Besides the 1913/1912 there are some other discrepancies. The Swiss document quoted in the NY Times gives the birthday November 22, 1858. In the left column the article says Muck was born in 1859. Indeed only then March 4, 1881, when Muck aquired Swiss citizenship, would be, in the words of the NY Times, soon after his twenty first birthday. Wikipedia gives us October 22, 1859 as Muck's birthday. And says that the father moved to Switzerland and aquired Swiss citizenship when Muck was 6. The NY Times says so too, but at the same time states that it was in 1867. In 1867 however Muck was at least 7. Considering all this I found a caveat quite appropriate.
On the other hand the impressive salary should be stated because it could provide an answer to Wikepedia's question: "Why he chose to work in America ...". Could it have been the money?
But "alledgedly" indeed may sound to harsh and I would certainly not mind to have it changed into something like e.g. "with, according to the New York Times, a yearly salary of 28,000 dollars."
In any case "free to ignore fact" should become " free to ignore the fact"

I think the only point that needed to be made was that the salary figure was not from an official source like Muck or the BSO. Saying the Times said it is fine. I just though "reportedly" would have been sufficient, while "allegedly" suggests an ongoing dispute. I'll check Howe's book again but I doubt it will help.

Yes, the dates are confusing. I'll make a change to something uncontested:

FROM Muck’s father moved the family to Switzerland when Muck was 6 years old
TO: Muck’s father moved the family to Switzerland in 1867

to the Karl Muck page makes no sense. That isn't a proper use of "See also" nor the proper style. "See also" is a standard section heading, not just a little stray text at the bottom of an article. It is also used to refer the reader to related material, not to a disambiguation page. Among a million examples, note that the Woodrow Wilson entry does not include a "See also" to Wilson. No one who lands on the Karl Muck entry will ever need or find useful a link to the Muck disambiguation page.
