Pronunciation[edit]

Why do we need to specify the pronunciation of the name if it is pronounced exactly the way it is spelled??? -- Trowbridge (talk) 16:46, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling of last name[edit]

My dad was a HS football teammate of Johnny's, and I had the opportunity to meet him once at a 50th anniversary celebration the town had for him for the 1941 season discussed on the page. It was at homecoming for the fall 1991 football season, and the entire town rolled out the red carpet not just for Johnny but the entire 1941 team, and most of the team plus coach Art Ruff were in attendance. As I understand it, the original plan was just to honor Johnny, but at Johnny's own insistence, it was expanded to honor the entire team. It was an entire weekend thing too. They brought the team out to midfield at halftime during the homecoming game, there was a cocktail party later that evening, and then the following evening there was a big banquet at the high school. I believe there were at least 500 in attendance. It was a great time.

So my dad always made reference to Johnny with the spelling and pronunciation of Lujack, and if I recall, the 1942 yearbook also spelled it Lujack. But I was looking through the Connellsville PA 1940 census records for some of my family, and I came across Johnny and his family. Now I know that between handwriting and possible communication breakdowns that the Census records gotta be taken with a grain of salt sometimes. But their family name was relatively clear to read and it looked to be spelled Luczak, which would probably be pronounced something similar to Lujack. I'd probably pronounce it wit a "ch" instead of a "j" but that's still pretty close.

Anyway, I wouldn't change the record for just that, but I can't wait to tell my dad <g>, and if anybody would like to check it out, it can be seen at:

http://1940censusrecords.archives.gov/

If you search Pennsylvania, Fayette County, Connellsville, you'll find PA.26-14 which I believe is the enumeration reference, and Johnny's family is on the 7th page of that enumeration.

See what you think.
