Pronunciation[edit]

I don't know how to cite this, or write the IPA, but I know from living in Victoria that the clue given by the alternate spelling, Wark, is the proper way to pronounce this name; of course in British English the "r" might almost "not be there" also. Not sure about younger folks, but older Victorians pronounce Mount Work this way, also Work Point.....Skookum1 (talk) 22:46, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dab should be reverted to John Work (fur trader)[edit]

I don't know who changed this but the "Canadian" dab is wholly inappropriate; Work died in 1861, six years before Canada got autonomy and ten years before BC joined Confederation; in Work's time "Canada" referred only to what is now Quebec and Ontario.Skookum1 (talk) 22:49, 29 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

While your point is well taken, Skookum1, we often do use modern nationalities for historic figures, simply because sorting by way of historic entities often isn't helpful to the reader. Having said that, it's a moot point, because occupation is always the first step in the standard hierarchy for disambiguation. So, support. As there do not appear to be any objections, and it's been several months since you made this proposal, the request for an admin to undertake the move should be made at WP:RM under "uncontroversial requests".--Skeezix1000 (talk) 16:19, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Huh? Re Fort Stikine murder[edit]

the cite is apparently the Dictionary of Canadian Biography = which is anything but an authoritative source for BC history (often full of errors, geographical and historical and more):

Work felt he needed more help so he arranged for the junior clerk at Fort Stikine to be transferred to Fort Simpson. This left the young McLoughlin without any company support at his post. A few months later, McLoughlin was murdered and his powerful father blamed Work for transferring his son’s only assistant away from Fort Stikine. In addition, it took over a year for Work to capture and send the three men involved in the murder south to Fort Vancouver.

That's odd to hear, because the murder happened on Russian territory and the trial was conducted at Sitka; I think it's in Simpson's journal that he was surprised to see the accused wandering the streets at liberty there; maybe Work eventually did bring them back south, but to what end? I remember that the principal lived out his years (can't remember his name)....I'll see if I can find the details again, I've been meaning to do it up as an article....Urbain Heroux (with an accent on the e in Herous) was I think the name of the main accused.Skookum1 (talk) 09:43, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
