First geologist in the Grand Canyon?[edit]

I'd like to add: In 1858, John Strong Newberry became probably the first geologist to visit the Grand Canyon. Discrepancy (talk) 18:50, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is the word "probably". Find a source that says he was the first; then you can add it with a citation to the source. —C.Fred (talk) 19:00, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the following reference calls him the first "known" geologist in the Grand Canyon: Victor Polyak, Carol Hill, and Yemane Asmerom, Science, Vol 319, 7 March 2008, pages 1377-1380. So I guess we can use that phrase. Discrepancy (talk) 19:51, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It is commonly accepted among geologists that Newberry was the first recognized, practicing geologist to visit the Grand Canyon. However, contemporary documentation on that matter is vague. We do not know if others had visited the location previously and declined to publish about it or otherwise discuss it. Al2oh3 (talk) 17:11, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
