Untitled[edit]

"John Smoltz, the Slovenian, was an All-State baseball and basketball at Waverly High School in Lansing, Michigan before the Detroit Tigers drafted him in the 22nd round of the 1985 amateur draft." I am not aware of Smoltz being a "Slovenian," so I removed that pending verification. Am I missing something, or is that detail either wrong or out of place in Smoltz's high school career? Does Smoltz have a change? I remember it being featured in a few video games, and I could swear that I'd see him throw it a few times a game. With a four-pitch fastball his main pitch, though, I may have just been seeing a straight fastball that he took a little off of. Anyone know for sure?

I just did a Google search and found this: http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseballlibrary/ballplayers/S/Smoltz_John.stm. According to the article, Smoltz does throw a changeup. I'll try to pay attention during his next start for the change-up, and see if I can get a mph if they have the radar gun on. A user just added that he stopped throwing the splitter in order to throw a change instead this year. This article says that he's using a change: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gid=260325115&prov=ap. I really doubt that he stopped throwing the splitter, so I'm going to take that out until we get confirmation. Cinquad 03:20, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers lists Smoltz as throwing a change, starting in 1989 and continuing through 2003 (the most recent season before the book's publication. They also list him as regularly throwing a two-seam fastball, a four-seam fastball, a curve, and a slider. Additionally, they note that he experimented with a knuckleball in 1999, and that he used a split-fingered fastball from 1995 to 1997 and 1999 to present, discontinuing its use in 1998 after it led to elbow pain. HOLY COW, MAN -- Look, I HATE the Braves but there's no pic of Smoltzy in a Braves uni?!?!? Seriously?!?!?!?! Two pics -- Red Sox and Cardinals. That ain't right. although I resent your, *ahem*, anger over the Red Sox picture, I also don't want to remember his time with the team (quite disastrous!), and anyway, he's one of the greatest--if not THE greatest--Atlanta Braves of all time. Doyle Alexander[edit]

There seems to be little too much info about Doyle Alexander and the Tigers. It doesn't really seem to fit in an entry about John Smoltz. Also, none of the information is cited.copana2002 10:41, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Italian Heritage?[edit]

Smoltz is apparently of Italian descent. He's included in a new Italian Baseball Heroes trading card set, sponsored by the Order Sons of Italy in America and produced by the National Ethnic Heritage Foundation.   • Smoltz is Italian (or at least part Italian). He is part of the D'Annunzio family tree, which is a well-known accordion playing family (Tony Dannon, born Antonio D’Annunzio, has a de.WP article). Smoltz even plays accordion, himself. Birth place[edit]

I don't know how to add a new citation without screwing up all the others, so I'll just leave this here for someone else. John Smoltz was born in Detroit MI (the page currently says Warren MI but I cannot see any source for that online).
