Siam mission[edit]

I request any and all editors watching this article see my work in progress in User:Pawyilee/sandbox/Crawfurd's_Siamese_mission. --Pawyilee (talk) 15:12, 10 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Over two years have passed, so guess I can do whatever I like. As the mission to Siam had the limited purpose of determining Siam's reaction to British encroachment into the Malaya states; and the follow-on mission to Cochin-China, to determine how much they might support French expansion into the Far East — both of which were mooted by the turn of events — my current thinking is that this section be condensed, with most of the copious background information added to articles where they are more relevant. Any comments, or must I go it alone? —Pawyilee (talk) 07:52, 18 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Race discussion[edit]

The article as it is written (2014-10-27) does not take seriously enough Crawfurd's role in raciology and as a vocal polygenist. The article soft-pedals these views, describing Crawfurd's distortions of Darwin as "alleged distortions", by failing to mention that Darwin's comments on Crawfurd's views as "Pallasian" were not meant only as an evaluation of the similarity between Crawfurd's thought and that of Pallas, but as a wholesale dismissal of Crawfurd's views on evolution, etc. 128.171.199.56 (talk) 18:17, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mrs. Crawfurd[edit]

George Finlayson's journal makes reference to Mrs. Crawfurd: "Mrs. Crawfurd had accompanied us to the village, and her presence conferred a degree of interest upon the scene not easy to be described. The men, stupid with wonder, seemed to look upon her as a being of another creation ; and indeed, if we cast our eyes upon the con-trast in the female forms now before us, their wonder will not appear surprising, and these rude and wretched savages might well doubt that they had but little connexion with our race. Never, per-haps, was savage life more strikingly contrasted with refined ; an accomplished female, brought up in all the elegance and refinement of the first metropolis in the world, stood opposed to the rude, scarce human forms of the savage islanders of the Gulf of Siam !"
