Infobox title[edit]

I added the period to accurately represent the book title, and it was reverted with the edit summary 'It should not'. The book's name includes the title, and this is depicted on the cover using Adams' signature signed with the period. Not using the real name of the book in the title is understandable for styling purposes (although I'd be in favor of using it), but portraying it in the infobox title at least allows the article to lean a bit more towards accuracy. I believe MOS:TM supports not including the full stop in the infobox. I added a mention of it in the opening sentence. I think the infobox should follow the WP:COMMONNAME rule. Note that the cited independent reliable sources also omit the period. I checked several of the independent reliable sources that are cited in the article. None of them included the full stop, either in their headlines or their article bodies. If CNN, The Christian Science Monitor, The New Yorker, and The New Republic don't think it is necessary to include the full stop in order to accurately represent the book title, I don't think we should either. — BarrelProof (talk) 01:59, 23 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. Good research, thanks. Your opening sentence placement works well. Only reason I knew of this was from a visit to the Adams' burial crypt, where the very informative guide pointed out that the name on the crypt was "John Adams." with the period and that he often signed his name like that. Doubt if I would have noticed the full book title, and unless the book publicist highlighted it I doubt many of its reviewers would have been aware of it. I just looked up the book on the publisher's website. It also doesn't include the dot except in the photo of the cover art: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/John-Adams/David-McCullough/9780743223133. Amazon doesn't have it either. Adams' signature on the Declaration of Independence and most of his signatures online don't include the dot, although the Treaty of Paris and others do, so he wasn't consistent in signing this way. I added "frequently" which maybe works. My sole knowledge of this is from a tour guide at his crypt, so haven't seen a reputable source. Randy Kryn (talk) 11:46, 23 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
