Name?[edit]

Forgive my ignorance, but is this man's name "Jerónimo Saavedra" or "Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo" or "Jerónimo Saavedra-Acevedo"? -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 20:33, 25 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spaniards as most of the Spanish speaking peoples have to surnames, the first one, known as paternal or first surname, is usually the father's first surname, The second one, the maternal surname or second, is usually the mother's paternal surname. Therefore you can say Jerónimo Saavedra or Jerónimo Saavedra Acevedo. The use of the Second surname in public is more usual when someone's first surname is very common, as in the Spanish PM José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero who is commonly spoken off as Zapatero. @Lefcentreright and Alsoriano97: I am unable to confirm that he was a first clearly stated and cited in our article. I see the bold claim in the lead but not the body. Our article says: After coming out, Saavedra joined Miquel Iceta as one of the first openly gay politicians in the history of Spain to hold certain high public offices Bruxton (talk) 15:57, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bruxton: Thank you for your observation. It is more a failure in the explanation. Iceta was the first politician to openly declare his sexual condition but he did not hold high public office until 2021. Saavedra, on the other hand, although he came out few years later, was the first to hold important political positions (since the 80s) like regional president, senator and minister. I have to fix this. _-_Alsor (talk) 16:19, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
