Speedy hangon

Unencyclopedic tone and parallel to another article are not speedy criteria. If they were, few articles would make it off the ground. --TeaDrinker 00:05, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

I think that this page should be updated and expanded. Jazz improvisation is much more complex and intricate than improvisation in rock, classical, folk, and most other styles.

The page is sloppy but I learned a lot from it - don't throw out the baby with the bath water, please. Rag47 (talk) 07:07, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

This article

This article is so problematic it might be better to delete it and start again. I was going to change some things in it but there is so much wrong with it I can't be bothered. If anyone else can, here are some ideas:

"Although swing was designed for dancing, bebop was not." This is untrue when put as plainly as this, and irrelevant, and in any case lacks any sources to back it up.

The whole of that section is full of vague notions about bebop that aren't really true: "Bebop used complex chord progressions, unusual altered chords and extended chords, and extensive modulations, including to remote keys that are not closely related to the tonic key (the main key or home key of a song)." This is not really true, since many bebop tunes wither were, or were based on, songs used in the swing era.

This next bit is so general it's really of no value, especially without examples: "Whereas Dixieland and swing tunes might have one chord change every two bars with some sections with one chord change per bar, bebop tunes often had two chord changes per bar with many changing key every four bars."

"In addition, since bebop was for listening rather than dancing, the tempo was not constrained by danceability; bebop tunes were often faster than those of the swing era." Also not really true. People did dance to bebop and people played bebop for dancers. Bebop tunes were not, as a rule, faster than swing tunes, although they may have featured "faster notes" in the solos.

I can't believe this article isn't brilliant, considering what a rich topic it is. Hopefully someone with more energy than me will come along and rewrite it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.54.2.161 (talk) 18:49, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
