I'm going to expand more about the repression a bit later, but I need help...I know there's a lot, but I can't seem to remember what else they did besides rape and massacre (well technically that's already a lot)....I have some block. I think that the occupation couldn't have been all bad. Certainly, they could have simply liquidated the city of its populace and hard assets. And sheesh.. Comfort women? How many would could have possibly been taken as forced prostitutes? This whole article is really just quite biased.
The Sook Ching wasn't a bad thing? It was an imposition of culture, massive censorship, forced to look to the Japanese as superiors, even worse than colonial rule. Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 15:19, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Undoubtedly, Sook Ching was a bad thing. But it is too agressive to say "forced to look to the Japanese as superiors!. I think that it was done just because the Japanese, despite their rule, still had unquellable fear that the people would uprise against them as a people. So by hiring informants, the people would mistrust each other and hence would not united, or be united.Zheliel (talk) 12:07, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

About Syonan/Shōnan[edit]

Copy/paste from Singapore's discussion page:

"I was reading the Japanese version of this article when I came across this:

>>この後、日本による軍政が敷かれ、シンガポールは「昭南島（しょうなんとう）」と改名された。 (From 2.3 日本による占領 )

Translation: "After the Japanese army took control, Singapore was renamed 'Shōnantō'" (or 'Shōnan-tō', which means Shōnan Island, with the Shōnan already being explained in the English article)

>>なお、昭南島とは「昭和の時代に得た南の島」の意とされている。 (Also from 2.3 日本による占領 )

Translation: "This name was to mean 'southern island gained in the age of Shōwa'".

Doesn't this mean that the tō (island) bit is part of the name, making it Shōnantō?

Also, back when I was in school, the textbooks claimed that Shōnan (they romanized it as Syonan, though) meant "Light of the South", and the Japanese article refutes this completely, so shouldn't that be mentioned as well? The textbooks may have been corrected since then, though, so someone would have to check."

Also, shouldn't Shōnan-tō and not Syonan-to be the "main" romanization? I checked the Wikipedia manual of style and it said to go with Revised Hepburn.

Sook Ching[edit]

Sook Ching. Now that's horrible.

Anyway, i noticed several errs , and as Knowl's junior, i aim to correct and right the wrongs.

  • "...to 'purify' the commoners and not have 'unloyals' going against them"

as "to 'purify' the commoners and not have any people willing to go against them."

  • "...There were secret informers all over the island."

as "There were secret informers all over the island, ready to accuse other citizens for the sake of protecting themselves"

  • "...These people were rounded up and taken to a deserted place to be shot, bayoneted, etc."

as "These people were rounded up and taken to a deserted place to dig a hole, which would be their grave, then shot and buried." Etcetera sounds to unprofessional, besides I already know the real thing ).

  • "...as the secret informers were well paid and they had a high chance of not being rounded up for shooting." as "as the secret informers were well paid and they had a would not be rounded up for shooting."

RE:Sook Ching[edit]

Ummm, the part about the informers getting well paid, actually on a few Singapore History Books, they state that the informers would be also shot, for fear of them going against the Japanese leaders... it takes a dog to recognise a real dog...

Meaning of Syonan-to[edit]

ALL Japanese sources refer to the meaning of the name as 「昭和の時代に得た南の島」, "an island in the south obtained in the age of Showa". Any other meaning you might be getting is outright wrong. Seibusinzyukusenn (talk) 10:16, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
