I had the pleasure of hearing and later meeting Jan Peerce in a San Francisco recital in the spring of 1977. Although Peerce was then in his early seventies, he still had a strong, clear, resonant voice. He was also a very pleasant, warm-hearted individual. Being a fan of Toscanini, I would have loved to ask him about his work with the Maestro, but there simply wasn't time since others also wanted to meet Peerce. Nevertheless, I always treasure this opportunity to see "Toscanini's favorite tenor" in person. Sallyrob 17:48, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Jewish-American

I think American citizens, no matter what their background, deserve better than to be given hyphens to denote their supposed ethnicity. "(Fill-in-the-blank)-American" is a patronizing and, frankly, detestable manner of referring to someone who may be black-skinned, Jewish, indigenous to the land, Chinese, or whatever. It implies that the person in question has less claim upon citizenship in a country which is essentially comprised of people from other places. It is more than fine to denote Richard Tucker as Jewish, but it would come as a surprise to the reader to be informed that he was, unless otherwise given special designation, not actually American. Of course Tucker is American. The only qualification one might wish is for people who are in this country but not naturalized citizens. But if one has become a citizen, either by naturalization or by birth, there should be no hyphenated designation by which to separate them. Would one refer to George Washington as English-American because his forebears were English? I know Washington would have objected. Richard Tucker, I am hoping, would object to his hyphen too.

Therefore, I firmly believe that the hyphenated ethnic designation is either patronizing, bigoted, or both. Americans are American, and that should be the only requirement for so naming them.
