Mary McCarthy[edit]

The article says that Risner described her portrayal of him as "character assassination" during an interview. Then, it says that this charge was "supported by several of McCarthy's liberal peers".

The page number in the citation of Frances Kiernan's Seeing Mary Plain: A Life of Mary McCarthy is incorrect. What does Kiernan's book say on the subject? It has Risner himself saying "Some of her contemporaries, who allegedly were her friends and were liberals like she was, took her to task for what she had done and said that was not a book review on her part, it was a character assassination." These are not people supporting his charge, this is him making (unsourced) claims.

A more neutral description would be that essayist Doris Grumbach criticized McCarthy's treatment of Risner. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.7.99.118 (talk) 20:39, 7 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, although Kiernan chose to include the quote, apparently without making an objection to its veracity. If he made "unsourced claims", she provided the vehicle. For the sake of neutrality, it will be rewritten.--Reedmalloy (talk) 22:14, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An additional source (Fallows) was located and cited; an interview with Kiernan herself, in which she explicitly sources the edit, was also quoted and cited, so I restored much of the original edit. That makes three, all sourced, which is "several". This was not "him making (unsourced) claims".--Reedmalloy (talk) 11:20, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Error?[edit]

He was a POW in Viet Nam for over 7 years, during which time "his children aged from 16 to 3"? The source for this seems to be a book, which I don't have, so someone else will need to address this. - theWOLFchild 02:31, 20 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence was poorly worded. They obviously all "aged" (i.e grew older) by the same seven years. Edited to indicate their ages when he "last saw them".--Reedmalloy (talk) 09:57, 21 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm the original author of this article, c. 2003[edit]

My name is Joe Gunter. It would be an honor if anything of substance needed to be changed, and editors contacted me first at [email protected], before changing anything.

Many thanks, though I'm aware this might be ignored - I'm still proud of the article.
