Compressed air caissons[edit]

These had been used on a number of projects prior to the Missssippi bridge: Eiffel used them for his bridge over the Garonne at Bordeaux (1858-60), and one of my sources on Eiffel gives a first use in bridge-building as 1851, by Cubitt at Rochester (Kent, England) in 1851. Eads may have been the first to usethe technique in the US?. Given this erroneous claim, I've stuck a cite tag on the first use of cantilever construction claim.TheLongTone (talk) 10:52, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bridges named after their constructor[edit]
