STEPHENS rather than BRUNTON STEPHENS[edit]

James Brunton STEPHENS went by his middle name Brunton. He married Rosalie Mary DONALDSON (b. 24 Oct 1846, m. Nov 1876, d. 21 Jan 1932), and they had five children born in Queensland:

  • daughter Jessie Mary STEPHENS, b. 05 Oct 1877, d. 16 Mar 1945;
  • daughter Mary Brunton STEPHENS, b. 15 Nov 1879, d. 02 Feb 1961;
  • son Hubert Brunton STEPHENS, b. 03 Aug 1881;
  • daughter Rachael Catherine Brunton STEPHENS, b. 09 Dec 1883, m. 21 Dec 1912 to Paul Francis CALOW, d. 02 Jan 1967;
  • daughter Georgina Brunton STEPHENS, b. 26 Jan 1886, d. 10 Jun 1961;

The grave stones however show BRUNTON STEPHENS as the surname for Jessie, Mary, and Georgina, as well as mother Rosalie. Rachael has also been recorded as STEPHENS[1] and also BRUNTON STEPHENS.[2]

However there are abundant records the poet went as (J)ames Brunton STEPHENS, and a few records suggesting the children used both styles. It is a source of passing confusion. — Q8682 (talk) 14:49, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
