In his TED Talk, Wale Elegbede (President of NAACP, Rochester branch) said: "I'm an American Muslim of Nigerian descent, and growing up, my parents instilled in me the importance of community and serving others. My mom is fond of an African proverb from my Yoruba tribe which states, “Ènìyàn kan lon bímọ, gbogbo ayé lon tọ́ ọmọ,” which translated means, "a single person gives birth to a child, but every other person looks after the child." Now, the essence of this proverb is: even though a woman gives physical birth to each particular child, the whole community plays an important role in looking after all children."

I think it's a good candidate for a probable source for the "It takes a village" proverb. CristianoCang (talk) 08:51, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Even when he's not a father, every man should always act as if he's every child's uncle. J.F van Kesteren. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:A45A:4694:1:BD27:1A0E:C4EA:BB0D (talk) 08:55, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
