foreign names of settlements/counties/unicipalities etc

You can add the foreign names you want properly. This article is about "Irakleia (Ηράκλεια) is a municipality in the Serres Prefecture, Central Macedonia, Greece. Population 13,173 (2001).". Can you imagine what would happen if any toponyme within Wikipidia would be given in the languages of peoples who lived there either as a majority or as a minority? Do you know how many places in Greece had Slavic names and how many of them and many others in many European and Asian countries had Greek? How many had Latin names or German in Poland or France etc? Saying in English "Lower Jumaya" is enough and is the norm in all such instances. Not even in Instanbul is the Greek name given in Greek and even New York City had a Dutch name. So, you can create the links in whatever language you want and add them under "languages". I don't understand why you want this so much, but it won't stand a debate. You say "It was the town that existed in former times, not the demos, so that's where the name must go" but :

1. this article is about the existent municipality as is and is called today in English.

2. It does not matter how it was called in the past, although you can mention it in English, just do not in Bulgarian and Aromanian. I see that sometimes you tend to add Bulgarian names to non-Bulgarian places and at the same time you do the opposite for other placenames. I never occupied myself with modern placenames, I just happened to come across this one. The convention you sometimes invoke gives you the right to state those names but it is not really followed anywhere in Wikipieda. You just make it more possible for nationalists to exploit this weakness. Do not forget that most Bulgarian cities and all placenames used to have Greek names and were populated by Greeks sometime throughout history. I also have to ask you why you add Bulgarian names to some articles and delete other foreign names in others.

3. You can expand the article by adding a history section. Just keep it neutral and well referenced and use the English names.

I'm afraid that what are you are doing now is trying to invent Wikipedia policy. This is not the place to do it.

The relevant policy in this case is Wikipedia's naming convention (available here: WP:NCGN). These guidelines specifically permits names which were used by former inhabitants: "Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted".

The Greek name of Istanbul and the Dutch name of New York city are not in the lead but in a separate section which is also permitted per WP:NCGN. However, there is little sense in having a separate section for such a small article, so having the name in the lead is quite appropriate.

The article is not only about the municipality but also about the town which as you can see doesn't have its own article. That's why I've inserted after the name of the town. Kostja (talk) 10:55, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
