Is it realistic to list all major Internet outages?[edit]
Given the large number of both outages and shutdowns that are happening on a weekly basis, is it realistic to keep a table up-to-date? As it is, this table hasn't been updated since 2019, and there were MANY Internet outages during 2020 and there continue to be in 2021. Should we perhaps have this page be more narrative text about different types of Internet outages? Perhaps mention briefly a few of the major ones, but not make a table with a list? - Dyork (talk) 01:22, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
Separate page for "Internet shutdowns"?[edit]
What would editors think about creating a separate article specifically on "Internet shutdowns"? Right now THIS article is trying to cover both "outages" that might be caused by technical issues (or DDoS attacks) and also covering "shutdowns" caused by government actions. Both Internet shutdown and the plural Internet shutdowns redirect to this article.
Separately, there is an entire section at Internet_censorship#Internet_shutdowns that goes into Internet shutdowns.
What if we separated the two topics? This article, "Internet outages", could be focused more on technical outages. The other new article on "Internet shutdowns" could cover the cases where governments mandate closure of Internet access. Some of the text from Internet_censorship#Internet_shutdowns could be merged into that new article, which could allow the very long Internet_censorship article to be a bit shorter.
Thoughts? Comments? I'd be glad to take a start on a new page if others agree. - Dyork (talk) 01:28, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
Internet shutdown in Myanmar (2021)[edit]
There was an Internet shutdown during the 2021 Myanmar protests, but it isn't included in the list of Internet outages. Does the list need to be updated? Jarble (talk) 03:52, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Jarble: I raised a similar question earlier ☝️ on the Talk page. There are MANY Internet outages and shutdowns that are occurring on pretty much a weekly basis. Here is one list (scroll down). I don't know if it is realistic to keep THIS page on Wikipedia up-to-date. This page also has both technical outages (cable cuts, routing errors, DDoS attacks) as well as government-mandated shutdowns. Again, I don't know if it makes sense to have them all on here. I don't have an answer about including the Myanmar shutdown. You would be welcome to add it if you want to. I do think there is a larger question about what gets added - or even if there is an actual table here. - Dyork (talk) 01:38, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
