Work to do[edit]

Guess we have a lotof work to do in the last 4 years of the decade. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jcrocker (talkcontribs) 04:05, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Name of Article[edit]

My main problem with this article as it stands is that the title of the article should be "International Decade for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World". I know it's a mouthful, but this is the official UN designation. Anyone know how to change the title of this article?

Unfortunately WP:Article Titles allows it, since WP:RS do support this Google Books. Other UN Decades are less of a mouthful. United Nations Decade of International Law, United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, United Nations Decade for Disabled Persons. One UNESCO source The art of living in peace: guide to education for a culture of peace by Pierre Gilles Weil, Unesco - 2002 does have "... was decided to prolong the campaign throughout the International Decade for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace and Non-violence and Peace for the Children of the World (2001-2010)." but it looks as though it was translated from French, doesn't mean that UNESCO have necessarily got the title right (as anyone who has read UNESCO publications will know!). Other earlier sources, including some UN ones, have abbreviated titles Newsletter of the Information Unit Peace Research Bonn Arbeitsstelle Friedensforschung Bonn - 1986 "The two large-format posters are entitled Conditions for Peace and Culture of Peace and are particularly relevant to the UN's International Decade for Peace. " ... it seems it was originally proposed in the 80s with a shorter title. But still, if there was any evidence at all for a shorter title.... International Decade for the Promotion of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the WorldInternational Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World – If one clicks on the United Nations resolution that established the Decade (see reference in first paragraph above), you will see that this is the title assigned by the UN. It would seem that the confusion arose because the title for the French version of the resolution includes "for the promotion of". In fact there were two, not one, discrepancies between the English and French versions of the resolution, since the French version also changes the order of peace and non-violence. By the way, the title of Wikipedia item for the French version, the "Décennie", is correct. In any case, the various events and documents published in English during the decade use the correct title, not the one that has hitherto been used in Wikipedia. See, for example above, the external link to the Website of Decade for a Culture of Peace.
