IDAHO / IDAHOT / IDAHOBIT Controversies

Until April 2013, all the acronyms on the page were "IDAHO". All this was changed, quite regardless of context, to "IDAHOBIT". Which is patently a political/non-neutral move and, as such, violates Wikipedia's codes. Aside from this, the "IDAHOBIT" Committee does not exist. It is called the IDAHO Committee (and recognised as such by 15 governments and the United Nations!). Rather than just coming in and changing the acronyms all of a sudden - regardless of context! - how about reflecting variations in acronym use, internationally, by creating a sub-section entitled "Different Names for May 17 Mobilisations", which could then include referenced examples? I already reverted the acronyms once, on May 17 itself, explaining that probably less than 90% of the people who mobilise globally around the day call it IDAHOBIT. This was then reverted again! I do not wish to start an edit war.

In general, coverage re. transhobia, biphobia and intersex issues should be improved, to improve the quality of the article and to represent the relevance of May 17 for different communities, but changing the acronyms so that they are non-recognisable, factually wrong in many cases, and politically motivated is not going to achieve that, and it is not what wikipedia is for.

Whoever is contesting the acronyms, can we resolve this please?

But can we keep any discussion focussed on improving the quality of the article, as "Article talk pages should not be used by editors as platforms for their personal views on a subject"

Again, check their website. IDAHO is the acronym they're using, like it or not. Wikipedia is about their acronym as it is, not as you would like it. Do not present your opinion on what the abbreviation should be as a fact here in Wikipedia. Unless you can cite it, IDAHOBIT as an acronym is just your invention and false information that should be kept out. Also, be civil and don't pull that ad hominem stuff against us. This is not an article on the original organisation though they are covered. Also that one organisation has no ownership of the day. The day has now evolved to be much more inclusive and the IDAHO name is outdated such as the name of their website will being just day against homophobia. The day is not just anti homophobia as the webiste domain they use still states. it included anti-bphobia and anit-transphobia. Please see some of these sources which clearly show it is IDAHOBIT and not the now outdated IDAHO here other sources can be provided if you require more evidence. If you wish to start a page on the original organisation please feel free to do so this though is about the day not the organisation. Also IDAHO is an erasure acronym just like "GAY PRIDE" is as opposed to simply "PRIDE" see the controversy of the use of the phrase "GAY ICONS" at Brighton pride 2013 which resulted in the theme being changed to "ICONS OF PRIDE". Hi there again. I will be updating in the next couple of days, as we discussed earlier this year. To improve the article quality in general, and hopefully to resolve any further dispute over the day's naming. As I suggested on May 28, it would probably be best to rename the article 'The Global May 17 Commemorations' (and redirect appropriately) and to cover issues over naming in a new section 'Names for May 17'. That said, where appropriate (but in a minimalist way) edits will name the day the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia - as it is widely recognised - as the article simply must be objective, rather than a space for disputes over the day's name - which should be directed elsewhere. The general focus of edits, however, will be on improving article quality and evidence, and updating information (as of August 2013, Louis-Georges Tin is no longer chairperson, etc.). I will also create a new page for the IDAHO Committee, as - I suggest - the day and the organisation are best not conflated. Just giving a heads up. Thanks. This comment was posted here and promptly deleted, "Speaking of controversies, apparently it was fine to pronounce IDAHO as if it were the name of the US State "Idaho"; but extremely uncool to pronounce IDAHOBIT as if it were the phrase I'd a Hobbit!". No, it's not a forum; it's also nobody's personal fiefdom. There was a serious point in the comment, which relates to how the article could be improved: is there an authoritative guide as to how IDAHOBIT is to be pronounced? Surely not letter-by-letter; or is it?
