Political status of the Indian Territory[edit]

Since the U.S. constitution applied fully to the Louisiana Purchase (and by extension, the land that would later be designated Indian Territory) after its acquisition from France, and there was no doctrine of territorial incorporation prior to the Insular Cases, the article should state that the Indian Territory was an incorporated and unorganized territory. You're reading it wrong. Unless you have a citation that says otherwise, the autonomous indian tribes were not "incorporated" into the US until 1906, when the territory ceased to exist and was united with the country. What article three does state is that they will be incorporated at the earliest possible time. It was a promise for the future, not an existing fact, made to assuage Congress. I think you may be discussing this with different frames of references for the same terms. The US clearly considered all of the area obtained through the Louisiana Purchase as sovereign territory of the United States starting in 1804. They also clearly did not incorporate Indian Territory into the United States until 1906. Those statements only contradict each other in normal, human English, not the nightmare that is International Legalese. Someone born in Indian Territory (like my husband's aunt) was born in a place owned and run by the US, but she was not born in the United States (something that was delightful to hear her explain to government clerks). I do not think that the encyclopaedia would be improved by trying to get into that in this article, but I wouldn't be upset to lose that argument. Confusing Maps[edit]

All of the maps are confusing in this article, but the one in the infobox is perhaps the most frustrating. Most (like the one in the infobox) show 'Indian Territory and Oklahoma [Territory]', but none of them tell which is which. There is a bright red line down the middle, but is Indian Territory to the west or the east of that line? Could someone who knows clarify the description with something like, 'The Oklahoma (left) and Indian Territories (right) in 1890', please? Cheers, Last1in (talk) 13:37, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The western portion of the map was labelled "Oklahoma", although it was a bit hard to see especially as a thumbnail. I've update the caption. older ≠ wiser 14:15, 16 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
