Suggestions[edit]

@Magentic Manifestations Here so this is what I was talking about. For the moment, I have copied stuff from the previous edit but for now this along with the match descriptions from the 2023 Cricket World Cup group stage and paraphrased summary should do. @Pharaoh496 Appreciate the effort. This article might still have quite a few issues as the original article. Following are my take on the article.
1.It needs a lot of credible references to be added. For example in the first match, apart from one source for the partnership between Rahul and Kohli and another for the match result, all other information does not quote any references. The match scorecard should be the primary reference for most of the information. Also for points like "On a dry wicket", how do we presume it was a dry wicket? Does sources quote it?
2. Formatting of the quoted references needs to be worked upon; Many are bare urls with just titles.
3.The article needs working on the tone of writing. It needs to be written from a general point of view as there are instances where it looks like a commentary.
4.The article might be too detailed and might not be of relevance to many. Only important instances need to be quoted as it is intended to be a summary and not a score card/news article. Many of the details are like a news article which Wikipedia is not WP:News.
5.You can transclude scorecards for the relevant matches which will communicate most of the basic information (scores, toss, venue, top scorer/wicket taker etc.), so that they need not be repeated in prose.
6.If you are using full names/first names/last names for players, it should be uniform across the article. Kohli is mentioned by last name and Rohit is mentioned by first name. Probably it is ok to mention full names for the first mention. If the mention is repeated, it should be either first or last name as a standard.
Taking an example, regarding the first match again, this could be written simply as:
India began their campaign with a win over Australia at Chennai. While batting first, Australia were bowled out for 199 with Indian spinners sharing six wickets between them. India lost three quick wickets for just two runs initially, before chasing the target successfully to win by six wickets with x overs to spare. Rahul (97* of x balls) and Kohli (85 of x balls) shared a 165-run partnership for the fourth wicket, which is the highest fourth wicket partnership for India in World Cups.
General points from the suggested example above:
- Captures the basic theme with the score and the result
- Partnership which is a major relevant event of the match is quoted separately
- When there are no stand out performance from one batter/bowler, not needed to quote every wicket taking bowler literally (Jadeja/Kuldeep/Bumrah)
- Not required to mention people who were out without scoring as this is simply news and conveys no significant information as they are insignificant contributors to the match
Example 2:
In the next match at Delhi, India beat Afghanistan by eight wickets. Batting first, Afghanistan were restricted to 272/8 with half-centuries from skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai and Bumrah taking four wickets for India. India chased the target with x balls to spare with captain Sharma top scoring with a century (131 off 84 balls) and an unbeaten half-century from Kohli (55* off 56 balls).

Hey

Looks better organized; Don't think sub-headings are required for Semis/finals as they are single matches. Also can do away with [W]/[L], looks awkward. Group stage table can also be transcribed.
Lead definitely needs working. Can be something like this:
The 2023 Cricket World Cup was the nth edition of the tournament, organized by International Cricket Council. The tournament consisted of x matches and was held in India in Month-Month 2023. India has participated in every world cup since the inaugural edition in 1975. In the 2023 World Cup, India finished as Runners-up after losing the final to Australia.
This was India's fourth appearance in a ODI World Cup final. Having won the tournament in 1983 and 2011, India had lost only once before in the finals also against Australia in 2003. As the hosts, India were amongst the favorites to win the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The Indian squad for the World Cup was led by Rohit Sharma.
In the World Cup, India won all the ten matches to finish at the top of the table in the group stage. In the semi-finals, India beat New Zealand by x runs before eventually losing to Australia in the finals by six wickets. Virat Kohli was the leading run scorer in the tournament with x runs and was awarded the man of the tournament. Mohammed Shami was the leading wicket taker with x wickets.

I think the w and l adds clarity as to whether india won or not, like when i do the pages of previous editions there will be many more ls, and for the semis and finals its to seperate the ‘further information’ while keeping the group format same :)
I’ll definitely take your lead tho Pharaoh496 (talk) 14:56, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
