The statement that

As a whole, Il trittico is quite balanced. Il tabarro, the first act, is very dark and brooding, full of the violence and grit associated with verismo opera. Suor Angelica, the second act, Puccini's personal favourite, is an up-lifting tale of religious redemption. Gianni Schicchi, the third act, is the most popular, a comedic farce full of greed and conniving.

is true. One can explain it better, but there is no doubt that Puccini tried to put together very different genres and characters, from the black tragedy of Il tabarro to the pathetic drama of Suor Angelica (yes, this was Puccini's personal favourite) to the comedic, cynical farce of Gianni Schicchi. My concerns with the above paragraph and the reasons I deleted it:

Let's see: they're not "balanced" simply because they're different... in fact, I believe Gianni Schicchi's extreme relative popularity unbalances the set; Il tabarro is not "full of the violence"... there is one murder at the very end; I think stating that Suor Angelica was Puccini's favourite necessitates a reference, esp. as he postponed its writing to work on Gianni; lastly, I, personally, would not characterize Suor Angelica as "up-lifting": she does kill herself in the end! Of course, most of these problems are simply disagreements in interpretation. However, if such pov statments (those dependent on your interpretation) are to be included, they must be cited, I think. -- Rmrfstar 02:09, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your point but I suggest to correct and improve the paragraph, more than deleting it. And yes, Suor Angelica was Puccini's favourite in the following years (I have read this many times, you can find this info also in Julian Budden's Puccini. His Life and works p. 403. Puccini finished Suor Angelica on 14 September 1917 and Gianni Schicchi on 20 april 1918.--Al Pereira (talk) 02:37, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
