The song is believed to be him giving her an ultimatum....?![edit]

It doesn't appear like an ultimatum to me:

"and now the time has come so my love i must go/and though i lose a friend in the end you will know..."

that seems like a straightforward statement, rather than a threat or ultimatum.

Is there a bass on this track?[edit]

Most sources make no mention of a bass guitar being on this track, but it can be heard on the isolated tracks. I only bring this up because Jean-Michel Guesdon & Philippe Margotin say "I've Just Seen a Face" is the first Beatles song to be recorded without a bass (p. 248; contradicting themselves in their personnel listing for "I'll Follow the Sun"), while other sources point to this song.

Here are some different personnel listings:

According to Walter Everett (2001, pp. 268–269):

Paul McCartney – lead and harmony vocals, acoustic guitar
John Lennon – harmony vocal
George Harrison – electric rhythm guitar, guitar solo
Ringo Starr – percussion (tapping hands on knees)
Unidentified – electric guitar

According to Ian MacDonald (2007, p. 138):

Paul McCartney – vocal, acoustic lead guitar
John Lennon – harmony vocal, acoustic rhythm guitar
George Harrison – lead guitar
Ringo Starr – percussion (uncertain, possibly slapping the top of an acoustic guitar)

According to John C. Winn (2008, p. 279):

Paul McCartney – lead and harmony vocals
John Lennon – harmony vocal
George Harrison – guitar solo
Unidentified – electric rhythm and acoustic guitars, percussion

According to Jean-Michel Guesdon & Philippe Margotin (2013, pp. 176–177):

Paul McCartney – vocals, acoustic guitar(?)
John Lennon – backing vocals, acoustic guitar(?)
George Harrison – lead and rhythm guitars
Ringo Starr – percussion (tapping hands on knees)

In his analysis of the song, Alan W. Pollack does identify a bass guitar: "The instrumental backing is most characterized by the finger-picking acoustic guitar part, in spite of the presence of electric instruments on the bass and lead guitar parts." I don't know if there's really anything else to say, I just thought it was worth bringing up these discrepancies in case this page is ever expanded. Tkbrett (✉) 13:21, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very skeptical as to how accurate some of these line-ups are, considering that Paul didn't have his left-handed Epiphone Texan acoustic guitar yet, and the syncopated acoustic guitar strumming is more typical of John.

I have listened to the recording and the lead guitar part (not the solo) sounds more like George playing his Gibson J-160E in electric mode, besides, according to a forum, the 4-track had acoustic guitar, bass and percussion on track 1, electric guitar on track 2, vocals on track 3 and guitar solo on track 4.
