Did you know... that in the rubber tree genus Hevea, H. benthamiana, H. microphylla, and H. brasiliensis are deciduous, while H. guianensis, H. nitida, H. rigidifolia, and H. spruceana are evergreen?

Etymology[edit]

In DRAE for jebe I read:

Del ár. hisp. šább, y este del ár. clás. šabb.

1. m. Bol., Ec. y Perú. hevea.

2. m. Am. caucho (‖ látex).

3. m. desus. alumbre.

So I understand that a Spanish name for Hevea and alum comes from Arabic wiktionary:shabb, the meaning of which I don't know.

In the French description linked to in the article:

Cet arbre eſt nommé SIRINGA par les Garipons ; HÉVÉ par les habitans de la province d'Eſmeraldas au nord-oueſt de Quito , & CAOUTCHOUC par les Maïnas ; PAO SERINGA par les Portugais du Para.

wiktionary:hevea says:

From the genus name Hevea, from Quechua hyeve (“rubber tree”).

but the etymology is unreferenced.

In DCECH for jebe I found that šabb means vitriolo and alumbre in Arabic.
