Henri Dutilleux was born in Angers, France. There appears to be nothing on the net that supports the claim he was born in Ireland! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Strav100 (talkcontribs) 03:00, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jean-Pierre[edit]

I could see no point in a line saying "for the same name see Jean-Pierre" or words to that effect. If it needs disambiguating (it doesn't) then surely this needs to be done at the surname level, but to do it here does not seem productive. I also note that the conscientious editor did not take the same step at the J-P article, saying "for the composer of the 'same name' [sic] see Henri". I wonder why not? :) 92.234.10.126 (talk) 14:40, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Composer's portrait[edit]

I had added to the article works and performers of Dutilleux's portrait, thinking that an example like that might show who is actually performing his works in general. I had added movements of pieces to the works section because they show his way of naming and of honouring friends like the Rostropovitchs or van Gogh ... Please discuss: "It (the piece mentioned before, Correspondances) was performed in the composer's presence by Barbara Hannigan (soprano) and the Orchestre National de France, conducted by Kurt Masur, at the Rheingau Musik Festival 2006, combined with Mahler's Symphony No. 1. In a chamber music concert the ensemble musikFabrik played 3 strophes sur le nom de Sacher, Les citations and Ainsi la nuit."

  • Les citations for oboe, harpsichord, double bass and percussion (1985-1991)
    • I. For Aldeburgh 85 (à Sir Peter Pears)
    • II. From Janequin to Jehan Alain (à Maurice Bourgue)
  • Correspondances, for soprano and orchestra (2003)
    • I. Danse cosmique
    • II. A Slava et Galina ...
    • III. Gong I - Gong II
    • VI. De Vincent à Theo ...

List of "early works"[edit]

It is said that Dutilleux "disowned" his works before a certain date, and for this reason they are in a separate list. But is this really the best way to present the information? Earlier the list of (all) works had asterisks marking the "earlier works", with a footnote. I submit that this would be better.

  • If you look in the list of works of a composer, and the "Piano" section is missing an obvious work, you are likely to add it in. That is perhaps why Au gré des ondes was in both lists until I just deleted one.
  • This is not juvenilia: Dutilleux was 30 before he wrote the first (published) work he didn't "disown". In the end, they are his works, whether he liked it or not.

So I think it would be better both in principle, and pragmatically, to combine the works in a single list, with some mark on the "disowned" ones. (What does it mean, anyway? Did he refuse royalties from them?)

I share your concern, but rather than dispute the organization now in place, I added a note under Works to explain that pre-1948 compositions are listed separately. Bmclaughlin9 (talk) 14:38, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering where was the WP:MOS direction to change "The New York Times" to "the New York Times" when used in the text? Along with many national newspapers The is used both on the name of the wiki article and in the masthead of the newspaper itself. If that's what it calls itself, how come we get to call it something else? It's not a big issue. I'm just curious. Some newpapers, like Daily Mail, don't have the definite article, but very many do. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:11, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The short answer is: Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Capital letters#Capitalization of "The". That said, however, there is still a lot of room for doubt on many titles that begin with an article.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 20:33, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, seems a bit debateable? Cases like "the Guardian" look worse, I think. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:43, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
One rule of thumb (not explicit in the cited guideline) is: "always capitalize The article in The title of A rock band: 'The Beatles', 'The Who', 'The Spice Girls', 'A Perfect Circle'; all other music-organization titles, lowercase: 'the New York Philharmonic', 'the Boston Symphony Orchestra', 'the Tokyo String Quartet', 'the Royal Opera'". It's something to do with over-inflated egos, I imagine.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 21:02, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you can get The Spice Girls in here, I'll be really impressed. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:31, 26 May 2013 (UTC) [reply]
