Nevins Memorial Library[edit]

The Nevins Memorial Library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I just created a separate stub article on it, and linked to it from this Harriet Nevins article. However, some more editing of the section on the Library is needed. Frankly i don't follow the narration about a library then about two houses then about the 305 Broadway property. For example it states "The Nevins Memorial Library is now located at 305 Broadway in that same city....", as if to imply it was moved. Is that building not the one built in 1883? I put in the 1883 date to apply to the first mention of library; perhaps that is not correct? Anyhow, I hope my digging out NRHP info is helpful, but it does need to be fixed up. doncram (talk) 05:02, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I (think I) fixed the confusing text and have an inquiry pending with the reference librarian in Methuen regarding David and Harriet's birth and death dates. - House of Scandal (talk) 18:16, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • The section is confusing. The title is about a library. It currently starts out talking about a library (call it library #1), then about a house, then another house, then about a library #2. I don't know if library #1 = #2, and i don't understand about the houses at all, why they are mentioned. If the first house is mentioned because it is on a property that was first donated, and the library was built on that donated property which was then split so #305 could exist, that should be stated, but it is out of chronological order and it is very unclear. Chronological order is an order that usually makes sense for readers; rewriting into chrono order would help. And, drop the discussion of houses and other buildings, now also the Home is mentioned, in a section about the library. Or retitle the section: "Various buildings associated somehow with Nevins". That's a bad title but is currently descriptive, perhaps. Urs in confusion. :) doncram (talk) 19:51, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IMAGE NEEDED[edit]

The Methuen Trails Committee has begun restoration of Bird Sanctuary that Harriet endowed to the people of the city of Methuen. We are desperate for an image of Harriet for the new signage. If anyone should come upon one, please don't hesitate to add it or contact us. Thanks. EraserGirl (talk) 21:31, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article Rewrite[edit]

I have substantially revised this article, including removal of much of what was already there. The original article contained much that had nothing to do with Harriet herself, and was merely general 'Nevins' information. But I have added in as much biographical data as there is on Mrs. Nevins. Also replaced are all the lazy online links (many broken), included now are citations from actual news articles and published works. There are probably a lot of grammatical faux pas that can do with a some polishing, if no one else feels like cleaning up my mistakes I will be taking another pass at it in the near future. I have some archivists looking for an image of the lady herself and will revisit it again. EraserGirl (talk) 02:01, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nice job EG. I've tweaked a bit here and there, but nothing major needed as far as I can see. However, "Mrs Nevins" would normally be referred to in the text simply as "Nevins", but it's nice to see "Mrs Nevins" which is both more affectionate and respectful so I didn't mess with that after the first instance. --Red Sunset 11:37, 30 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I agree with the appellation custom of Last Name, but since there were several 'Nevins' in the article, I wanted to eliminate confusion. I am going to go into deep search mode, hopefully I will find something else that the 3 town historians have missed. they didn't have the horse ambulance material. That was a coup.
