Ants[edit]

Harlow Shapley had a great fascination with the thermokinetics of ants. Why is it not mentioned on here? Gunblader928 (talk) 00:45, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Untitled[edit]

Below is a sentence from the main article:

"During this time, he hired his future wife Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, who became the first person to earn a doctorate at Harvard University in the field of astronomy."

I can't believe Payne-Gaposchkin was Harlow Sharpley's wife! The Russianized part of her surname "Gaposchkin" clearly indicated that she was married to the Russian-born astronomer Sergei Gaposchkin. Frigoris 11:52, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How do you know he didn't marry Sergei's wife after they divorced and she kept his name. 24.38.149.40 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 05:36, 29 June 2011 (UTC).[reply]

I think there can be more information included in the genera;l overview of Harlow Shapley in terms of his contributions to science and who he was. The following is a list of some sources that can be used: http://biography.yourdictionary.com/harlow-shapley http://apod.nasa.gov/debate/1920/shapley_obit.html https://www.britannica.com/biography/Harlow-Shapley http://www.encyclopedia.com/people/science-and-technology/astronomy-biographies/harlow-shapley Mahwish.razi (talk) 01:37, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Communist front affiliations?[edit]

So am I going to have to point all this out or is someone going to do the honest work? Stating that Shapley was a victim of McCarthyism is an absolute lie. This guy was member of numerous Communist front organizations and was the Chairman of the "National Council of Arts, Sciences, and Professions", of which even President Truman denounced as a "tool for Russia and a sounding board for Communist propaganda". Jtpaladin 21:59, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All that need be shown is a reliable source stating that the subject was actively involved with the promotion of Communism and that can be removed. As far as I can tell from researching the matter personally the article accurately reflects historical consensus as it stands. --ForbiddenWord 15:24, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're joking right? I have enough verifiable WP:VERIFY & reliable source WP:RS documentation on Shapley's communist front activities to double the size of the article. Would you like to see it? Just say the word. Jtpaladin 19:04, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm not joking. Every source I found that drew a direct connection between Shapley and a communist front was verifiable, but not reliable. --ForbiddenWord 17:41, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Harvard's First PhD in Astronomy[edit]

Harvard's first PhD in Astronomy was awarded to Frank S. Hogg in 1929, according to Bart J. Bok's 1978 biographical memoir on Harlow Shapley for National Academy of Science. In contrast, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin was awarded the first PhD in Astronomy by Radcliffe College in 1925 for work done at Harvard College Observatory. Finding sources for the quotes[edit]

Piece of information: The sentence 'Theories crumble, but good observations never fade.' is attributed to Shapley in the book "Big Bang" by Simon Singh (2004). — Preceding unsigned comment added by M. Tewes (talkcontribs) 13:33, 19 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Image[edit]

I think the image in the template should be changed because the current one is low resolution. I believe that this, that is this, should be better, but I don't know if I can upload it and use it on Wikipedia. Can someone explain me how to understand if I can upload this kind of images? --Almicione (talk) 21:06, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Almicione, please see Wikipedia:Image use policy for guidance on what images are acceptable for use on Wikipedia. Peaceray (talk) 22:26, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Jewish refugees[edit]

This article should be updated to include mention of Shapley's considerable efforts between 1933 and 1945 to save and resettle scholars who lost their posts and became exiles because of Nazi persecution. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.134.204.39 (talk) 16:21, 22 March 2017‎
