The statement in the main article that the handicap makes races "fairer" is disputed. In other sports adding variable weights to the competitors would be called "cheating" or "fixing".

What is "cheating" is of course dependent on the sport in question. If the rules of a sport, or at least a particular competition allow it, handicapping is no more cheating than using your hands in basketball is, or using your feet in soccer.Wschart (talk) 13:19, 11 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
