Subaltern[edit]

'Subaltern' is not a commissioned rank in the British Army. It is a customary term referring to the most junior commissioned ranks of second lieutenant and lieutenant [EDIT: these are the ranks to which the Gazette entries cited refer]

The references in the articles should be amended accordingly.

Duly amended

I note that this amendment has been reverted. I should be grateful if the editor could explain why this should be and on what basis. It would have been helpful to discuss those here before reverting without explanation. Reference to the Gazette entries cited will show no reference to a rank of subaltern- which does not exist- and only mentions the substantive ranks in which the subject is being confirmed. i.e. Second Lieutenant & Lieutenant.

I shall wait a week before restoring the edits. JF42 (talk) 11:41, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
