Is this article for real?[edit]

The concept of Mauritanian irredentism strikes me as a contradiction in terms. The name "Mauritania" is ancient, but the modern state was born half a century ago with no history. As the French divided up their holdings into independent countries, there was a left over spot on the map. Senegal and Mali didn't want it, and the French wanted to keep Algeria and Morocco from taking it over, so they made a country.

Am I misinformed? Is there some Mauritanian identity which predates the decolonization? — Randall Bart (talk) 19:58, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
