Subject matter[edit]

As originally written, this is primarily an article on Dumbarton's Regiment rather than Dumbarton himself. He was a significant player in Scottish politics so it should be expanded. I'll give it a go and if anyone wants to review changes and suggest corrections etc, please feel free :).

The duel[edit]

The image used to illustrate the duel between the Earl of Dumbarton and the Duke of Normandie is, in fact, of the 'Duel between Lord Hervey and the Honble William Pultney. A Consequence of the Motion' by Thomas Kitchin (1719-1784). Is it appropriate to use it here? Shipsview (talk) 17:50, 9 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was using it to illustrate a duel, not the duel between Dumbarton and Normandie but I've clarified the caption; see what you think.

If you're referring to the suggestion by another editor the duc de Normandie was James II :), no idea where this comes from. It appears in one or two other Wikipedia articles (queried by others) but I can't find any 3rd party source that makes this claim - and the idea Dumbarton would fight a duel with the heir to the British throne seems weird. I suspect the name is incorrect.
