"beset by violence" is disingenuous[edit]

To say that Latortue's government was "beset by violence" is highly disingenuous when the public record clearly shows that Latortue's unelected government, having been installed by a combination of paramilitary and foreign forces, was the primary contributor *to* the violence. Quote from article: "Furthermore, his Government was beset with opposition from the Fanmi Lavalas political party; an ongoing flight of foreign capital and human resources (especially by the country's economic elite, which, through the Group of 184, had steadfastly supported the coup against Aristide and had contributed a significant amount of personnel to the subsequent government); and violence by and between gangs, rebels, and militants (especially in Port-au-Prince and its metropolitan area), many of whom are either former members of the Haitian Armed Forces (disbanded by Aristide) or street gang supporters of the Aristide government "Chimere"." This leaves the impression that his government was "beset by violence" coming from outside forces: either ex-army/ex-death-squad paramilitaries who are portrayed by the article as outside of the government (rather than closely backed by his government, as was the case), or "street gang supporters of the Aristide government" whose role in the violence was mostly self-defensive anyhow (and at least pales in comparison to the scale of government violence). Under Latortue there were thousands killed and tortured by paramilitaries who worked directly with Latortue's government. I'm going to build up a more accurate picture of all this -- Peter Hallward's book, "Damming the Flood," is just one that is thick with citations on this subject -- and edit the article to be more straight forward. As is, the article is akin to the media attitude in the 80s of El Salvador where it was claimed that death squads were unconnected to the government, which (as in Haiti under Latortue) was very obviously not the case. 173.3.41.6 (talk) 02:09, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
