Spelling[edit]

I propose that we decide on a consistent spelling for the name of this island because there seems to be a lot of variations. The official website of the island is spelled 'Fuvahmulah', the article title is 'Fuvammulah' and inside the article it was spelled in various manners (which I corrected). --Fizan

Fuvammulah is used in atolls ministry website [1]. I think we should follow the naming convention used in their site and assume it to be "official"? As for the variations, several redirection pages can be created and then redirected to the article. Incase if anyone needs help with redirection, check Wikipedia:Redirect --Oblivious 13:10, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The name "Fuvammulah" does not follow Wikipedia's naming conventions. It is not the common name of the subject. The common name of the subject is "Fuvahmulah". The Atolls ministry website link given by Oblivious no longer exist. No matter it was in the past, Wikipedia prefers the common name to be used for it's pages. Taking into consideration different organizations of Maldives, almost all the government offices and other different organisations use "Fuvahmulah" in their writings. The spelling used in common and preferred by the people has to be favoured over the minor spellings. Almost all of the government websites including the President's office website, almost all of the ministries and government department websites and Government schools of Fuvahmulah, Maldives Post Ltd., Dhiraagu, Wataniya, Bank of Maldives, State Trading Organisation, Local websites, etc... use "Fuvahmulah". Hardly we could find "Fuvammulah" from any of the offices and organisations. Hardly we could find. So even if it was used by Atoll's ministry website which no longer exist, it can't be used as a proof. It can't even be considered as official by then as "Fuvahmulah" is being used in the President's office and most of the Ministry websites as well as that of the major Organisations. The search results also tell that "Fuvahmulah" is the correct spelling. It is the spelling used across the internet ranging from famous international websites, Government Offices to local websites and internet communities of the island such as Fuvahmulah.com, kattelhi.com, haveeru.com.mv, Facebook pages, etc...

The search results from Google tell that the spelling "Fuvammulah" is only used by foreigners. Searching for the word "Fuvammulah" one could hardly find any reasonable pages from Maldives. Searching for "Fuvahmulah" from google gives 221,000 results at present, while for "Fuvammulah" it gives 28,300 results. It also asks to correct the spelling asking "Did you mean Fuvahmulah".

This proves that "Fuvahmulah" is the spelling commonly in use and it is the way preferred by the people. The spelling "Fuvahmulah" is nicer. More beautiful than "Fuvammulah". The name of the island is derived from "Fuvah" (Areca nut). So Fuvahmulah must be the original name and it is the correct way regarding the etymology of the name. No one can refuse the fact that Fuvahmulah is the spelling preferred by the majority of the people in Fuvahmulah and what commonly in use. Internet search results prove that Fuvahmulah has to be used in Wikipedia too. This page of Wikipedia also has to be with the other internet pages of the island on the search results. With respect to the Wikipedia guidelines this page should have the correct spelling commonly in use and with respect to all the points above the spelling of this Wikipedia article has to be changed to "Fuvahmulah" which is in common usage and is the spelling preferred and used by the people of the island as well as the local organisations. See the search results and websites. As "Fuvahmulah" is the common name the name has to be changed soon.

Nyaviyani Atoll?[edit]

I am from Nyaviyani Atoll.

I think thats not Nyaviyani Atoll. Its Ghaviyani Atoll. The short form is Gn. Gn.Fuvahmulah (like B.Eydhafushi).

thanks

I think you meant Gnaviyani. Yeah this is how they used int Atolls website. But its real phonetic equivelant should be Ñaviyani Atoll. Since Atolls website uses Gnaviyani and is considered official, I will be moving the page to this title and bring necessary changes. --Oblivious 21:39, 29 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Consistency is not Necessary[edit]

There is no need for a consistent spelling. The main reason is that when writing in the Latin script, Fua Mulaku is much nicer, more traditional. H.C.P. Bell used it, The Navigational Admiralty Charts used it, and so it is more well known internationally. Besides the name Fuvammulah looks very very ugly. Names that are beautiful like Manila, Dubai, Java, Rome, Tokyo, Sydney, don't have double letters. Also in Male' they don't spell it Maale, as it should be. They write Male'. They don't want to have the double-lettered 'Maale'. Have you noticed that? So why should we be asked for consistency in Fua Mulaku if the Capital of the Maldives is not preaching with the example? Is anyone writing Maale? So when and if they begin to do so, we will write the ugly Fuvammulah name.Mohonu 08:42, 22 March 2007 (UTC) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mohonu (talkcontribs) 08:35, 22 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Ugly Fvammulah? heh? Mohonu my man, what have you got against this island (if you have anything against it, that is)? --Oblivious 10:08, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The island is not ugly. The name written in latin looks ugly. In Male' they have that natty looking name with the little tick over the 'e'.Mohonu 12:44, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Population Figure[edit]

does anybody think that the population figure mentioned in the atricle should be changed from 7642 (according to planning.gov.mv ) to 10270 (according to atolls.gov.mv)? It seems that government ministries differ on the figure. The reason I think that this figure should be changed is, even 6 years ago, the population figure of this island was around 7000. Also, local media including TVM, Haveeru News and Aafathisnews mention in their articles/reports that the po;ulation of this island is more that 10000.

Population figure change/update[edit]

I have changed the population figure to 10506. This is because the Planning (Ministry of) is out of date, given that the population figure on Atolls Development (Ministry of) website is more recent. http://www.atolls.gov.mv/islands.asp?atoll_letter=R&islandcode=R1%20&atolldhiv=Gnaviyani I have given necessary reference links to verify the reliability of the data.

Dhadimago stub[edit]

It has been suggested that the article, Dhadimago be merged into Fuvahmulah. But, I don't think there is any use of doing it. In case of Addu Atoll there are separate articles for Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo and on. More significantly, there are long articles for the cities in California state such as Los angeles and on.

I suggest that it would be much better for Wikipedia to have rich articles on every district in Fuvahmulah. Besides the fact that Fuvahmulah is naturally an atoll, from olden days the rulers of Maldives consider the districts of Fuvahmulah as seperate islands and there were Katheebs (Island Chiefs) appointed for each district as in case of the small islands in Maldives. If no chance for the districts in Fuvahmulah which has been considered as separate islands historically, then there should be no chance for smaller islands in Maldives such as Holhudhoo, Thinadhoo, Fares Maathodaa, etc.. which are smaller than most of the districts of Fuvahmulah. Long articles can be written for each district in Fuvahmulah. Almost, each have a long history. Each district have its own ways. If all are to be written in the article Fuvahmulah, there will be no limit.

Moving page[edit]

With respect to the points presented above, I would like to request an administrator to move the page to the name "Fuvahmulah" under which there is a redirect page. I am unable to move due to the presence of some edit history over there. I would like to bring to your attention that the current name "Fuvammulah" does not follow Wikipedia's naming conventions. It is not the common name of the subject. The common name is "Fuvahmulah". "Fuvahmulah" is the most famous and the most preferred way as well as the correct way taking into account the etymology of the name. For further details please look at the points I have presented on the Spelling section above. Nxxxn (talk) 09:43, 4 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Merge Dhashukubaa stub[edit]

I would like to propose merging the Dhashukubaa stub into the main Fuvahmulah article. As it stands, there is insufficient material to justify a separate article for Dhashukubaa. SpookiePuppy (talk) 12:39, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Redirected that stub, as there was no unique content to merge. Klbrain (talk) 16:56, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
