Moving the article[edit]

This page's talk page previously went to here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Francisco_Solano_L%C3%B3pez_%28comic_book_artist%29, so I moved the article from "Francisco Solano López" to "Francisco Solano López (dictator)" so a new talk page could be made. Date of birth[edit]

He was not born in 1827, but in 1826. The former is a false date propagated by López and his sympathizers. He was born very soon after his parents had married, meaning that he had been conceived out of wedlock. He was ashamed of this and moved his official date of birth a year forward. Surname is López[edit]

In this article and others about Paraguay authors mistakenly refer to López as "Solano López." López is his first surname--his father's surname. Solano is his second name. He should be referred to as "López." Guaraniab (talk) 20:41, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Atrocities and Oppression[edit]

Nothing about those here? I guess the revisionists are running wild on Wikipedia too. :P

There weren't oppressions until Paraguay began losing the war. Most, if not all, of his atrocities was executing POWs and anyone who was Argentinian or Brazilian due to his increased Paranoia. Veritiel (talk) 12:07, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You cannot establish something "beyond doubt" without strong evidences and a professional opinion. Regarding him as a military leader, he was nto the best, but most of his orders were either not obeyed of miscarried by some of his generals. This led to some big defeats for the Paraguayan Army, so again, hard to say it was entirely his lack of strategic skill as a generally unprepared and unexperienced army officers. He executed his brothers-in-law (the husbands of his two sisters) and his two brothers. His two sisters were tortured and kept in small cages, like they were animals. He tortured his mother and ordered her to be executed. Just when she was about to be executed the Brazilian cavalry reached the Paraguayan camp and killed López. --Lecen (talk) 23:47, 8 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV and accuracy[edit]

This article cites no references and it even contradicts with other Wikipedia articles. Such is the case when telling about how the war began. This article says "In 1864, in his self-styled capacity of protector of the equilibrium of the region, he demanded that Brazil should abandon her armed interference in a revolutionary struggle then in progress in Uruguay. " Yet in the War of the Triple Alliance article it states that Uruguay asked for Paraguay's intervention. This should be edited as to have a consistency on the facts. Also, the final part talking about his burial by Lynch state "His wife which was a prostitute from europe, which was a main factor in the war, was forced to bury her son and husband in the rain in a tatters dress after his death. ". This is hardly encyclopedic language. It has already been stated before this that she was a Parisan Courtesan, why call her prostitute again? Also, there are no references about source and the description of her in a tattered dress while raining seems quite romantisized. "Considered ambitious, perhaps arrogant, and possibly insane, Solano López is widely regarded as being responsible for the War of the Triple Alliance, which led to his death." I have never read a sentence on Wikipedia with such poor standard. I have organized this article a bit. I didn't change much besides cleaning it up a bit more as giving it a structure. The only part that I did change was the details regarding his death. I changed the original version:

As Vice President[edit]

The page was added to the Paraguayan Vice President's category. I had undone it since, as far as I know and have read, he was never an actual vice president during his father's rule. It was changed again saying that he was appointed to the office from 1854-1866, but during that time his title was of Minister of War, not Vice-President as it mentions in the article, backed-up by a source. I'm going to erase the category again, since it's not sourced. If you find a good verifiable source stating that he was Vice-President, please add the category again as well as edit the article as to include it in it. Thanks. There was a claim in the article, but I just rechecked the source it claims, but it never mentions anything about him being a vice-president, only how he became president. The article text I took out is: " his will stipulated that López assume the reins of government as vice-president.", which referred to Carlos Antonio Lopez's will and it's talking about his son Francisco Solano. Again, I took this out since the source didn't mention anything about this. If someone can back this claim with a verifiable source then feel free to add it again.
