Comment on Bach's Chaconne?[edit]

I have seen many guitar recording liner notes that state that Fetis called the Chaconne the greatest single piece of music ever written (or words to that effect). Can anyone provide a direct quote? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.72.101.218 (talk) 01:39, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Musical Hoaxes[edit]

The following statement in the article is false: "This Strobach (fl. 1650-1720) served Leopold I, and there is no evidence that Fetis's score is a hoax. The composition was published in 1698, although no copy is known to have survived, except Fetis' manuscript score, which is in the Royal Conservatory Library in Brussels." This view has been thoroughly repudiated by scholars, the piece is indeed a hoax and Strobach is a fictional composer invented by Fétis.
