Fair use rationale for Image:Arms-w-yorks.jpg[edit]

Image:Arms-w-yorks.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Ridings and counties[edit]

I understood that these symbols were granted to councils rather than divisions of land. May I suggest a double check? -- Jza84 · (talk) 01:54, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also, what source is used for the flags? The Flag institute doesn't recognise these (as I understand). Are these recognised by some other body? - the College of Arms for example? -- Jza84 · (talk) 01:57, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the Yorkshire Flag is recognized by the Flag Institute and listed in the UK Flag Registry[1].

This is a direct link [2] as is this [3]. Apparently designed by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, so presumably of 1970s vintage?
The flag has competition, though, if [4] is to be believed, designed by the (then) Director of the Flag Institute. Actually a nicer flag IMHO, but the blue one seems fairly well established.Lozleader (talk) 15:29, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well spotted. I'm just concerned we're claiming "flag of Yorkshire" when the reality (as always it seems!) isn't that simple. We had some interesting flags of the modern ceremonial county councils up here not long ago, but they seem to have gone, which is a great shame. Image copyright problem with Image:S yorks.JPG[edit]

The image Image:S yorks.JPG is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Yorkshire Flag is the wrong colour[edit]

I believe the colour is controversial. The flag registered by the YRS at the Flag Registry has background of Pantone 300, and that is what is shown in the article [5]

"The YRS also chose the shade of blue as Pantone 300 which they felt gave a bright and colourful flag." [6] Essentially, they registered a *new* flag, although heraldically blue (azure) is blue, regardless of the shade. Lozleader (talk) 15:53, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The dark shade of blue is very traditional, i'm not sure their rather presumptuous decision to change that is really going to have much effect in real terms. It does seem that there has been some questioning of the Yorkshire Ridings Society's right to register the flag with any consultation.[7] --neon white talk 21:58, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
