What did УССР stand for?[edit]

Did the letters УССР (USSR) in the 30s flag stand for Ukranian SSR (in Russian) or for Union of SSRs (in Ukranian)? Qwertyus 11:51, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

УССР is a Russophone abbreviation and stands for the Ukrainian SSR. English language was never widely used in the Soviet Union, only Russian. As reminder, Union of SSR (English: USSR) in Russian is СССР. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 14:37, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mistake?[edit]

There is obviously a mistake either on the inscription of the 1937 flag or in the text. The first one reads У.С.P.Р. while in the text it is У.Р.С.Р. So, which one is wrong, the picture or the text?--171.161.160.10 20:23, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No error. According to this Russian page on Ukrainian SSR flags, the flag with У.С.Р.Р. was used between 1927 and January 30, 1937. While the flag with УРСР was used between January 30, 1937 and 1945. Cmapm 00:09, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The order of the official name was changed in 1937 after the adaptation of the 1936 Stalin Constitution. In both cases the abbreviation is in Ukrainian rather than in Russian where the extra P letter represents word Rada instead of Russian Soviet which both are translated as a council.
