Contested deletion[edit]

I disagree with the notion to delete this article, and believe it is notable to stay. One of the arguments against it is that its not official flag. But it doesn't has do be. Its about a concept of proposed idea for a potential symbol. No different than Flag of Antarctica, or Flag of Mars, both of which are basically lists of unofficial flags. Yet nobody contests those articles. Additionally, both the concept itself for the Earth flag, and various designs have significant coverage in media. Additionally a lot of those designs are significantly used by various movements.

Additionally, the idea for the symbol of thr humankind, and a planet inhabited by 7 billion people, should be notable by itself. In the time of globalisation, and widespreading pro-cosmopolitan identeties, denying the fact that humanity is searching for a symbol to stand by, is just wierd. It should be acknowledged on the Wikipedia. Artemis Andromeda (talk) 02:24, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, Earthling. Sometimes AfD gets it wrong, and this seems like one of them. Keep and improve seems a good option, and you've already worked up some nice edits. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:51, 24 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Threshhold of notability[edit]

There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of flags of Earth, but not all of them should be mentioned in the article. I've removed the Lopez flag since the only source was a talk by the flag's creator, a source not independent of the subject. It seems like all the others include two sources, one of which is always self-published. I know McConnell and Penerfeldt's flags are widely discussed. I will go through and try to clean up others, but I would appreciate help and input in finding additional sources and deleting entries that don't meet WP:N.  Not A  Witty Fish 14:20, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I looked through and deleted one, which was identified as a personal flag rather than a world flag. I also suggest deleting James W. Cadle's design as it only seems to be used by one organization (SETI) and is hardly mentioned elsewhere. Similarly, Bortholomew's flag is hardly mentioned at all outside of self-published articles. I would appreciate a consensus before I do so though.  Not A  Witty Fish 22:40, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@NotAWittyFish:Hi. I agree with you that some of those flags weren't notable enough. It is my fault, as I believe I originally set to low standards for those. About the aforementioned flags. I believe that Caddle's flag should stay. It seem to be notable and used internationally, especially by scientific community of SETI, which itself is well established organization (alsobthem using this flag, makes is to some degree the symbol, technically used to represent earth to extraterrestrial life). Additionally flag itself is well established being one of the first well known and used Earth flag designs. As such, I believe that it should stay, and we should perhaps try to find more sources for that section. About the "One World Flag". I have also doubts in how notable is that flag. I saw a few Earth flag lists, listing it as one of the designs (such as CRW Flags). Acording to its own website and some interviews with thr author, the flag is well known symbol, though it has to be taken with the pinch of sault, as those seem to might be influenced by the author overstating the actual facts. As such, I think it would be smart to try and find more independent sources for that project. But I personally, don't want to state whether this flag should be left in, or removed from the article, before we can reach consensus with more people in here. Thanks, @Artemis Andromeda. I have searched extensively and not found substantiating sources outside of the one article already mentioned here. I will remove the section for now, but if additional sources are found or if editors reach a different consensus, we can restore it.  Not A  Witty Fish 18:26, 4 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
