Population figures[edit]

The article previously read, "with the arrival of 266,000 Jews," but there was no citation. I changed that to read, "with the arrival of 225,000 to 300,000 Jews" and "with at least 55,000 Jews from Central Europe immigrating to Palestine or residing there as semi-permanent residents." I cited an article by Yoav Gelber. Gelber notes that the population of the Yishuv was 174,000 in 1931 and 400,000 in 1936. That makes for an increase of 226,000 between 1931 and 1936. If the Fifth Aliyah lasted from 1929 to 1939, it would be accurate to write "225,000 to 300,000 Jews," at least until someone can provide more precise data. Gelber also notes that 82,342 Jews came to Palestine from Central Europe between 1933 and 1945. He breaks down his categories by nationality (German, Austria, Czechoslovak), visa status (legal immigrant, tourist who stayed, illegal immigrant, etc.), and time period (generally 1933-1938, 1939, 1939-1945). Thus, I have subtracted certain categories from the 82,342 to come up with a figure a little more than 55,000 for the years 1933-1939. Poldy Bloom (talk) 22:21, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How is it different from Aliyah Bet?[edit]

What is its precise definition? Is it the first, pre-WWII part of Aliyah Bet, with a second one after 939, maybe also with a distinction between wartime (1939-45) and post-WWII (1945-48) periods?
