Based on National Lampoon?[edit]

The character is likely based on a one-page fumetti in National Lampoon in which a balding executive-type behind a desk reveals to the reader his secret identity, "Fartman", and the powers (such as flight) which he is granted by igniting his flatulence. He points out that he could be a GREAT superhero, if he only dared to use his powers in public. He then buries his face in his hands and sobs, "But I don't! Would you?! FARTMAN, for christsake!". Forget "likely based on." Stern flat out stole the character. The intro Stern would use for the character is pretty much, word for word, the intro used for National Lampoon's version on National Lampoon's White Album and that came out in 1979. I recall being a huge Stern fan as a teenager and coming across the NL album and being shocked how he had blatantly stole the material.
