Dictionary definition?[edit]

Smallpox[edit]

no, it's an Acytotus. I think that was a sort of joke/fun fact, and not really a relevant piece of the article (that is, I don't think small pox has that IUCN status). A1s 20:36, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Smallpox was removed then returned to the article. If it's a joke, it's not terribly amusing. Can it be forcibly deleted? Hovea 02:56, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Species examples[edit]

Could there be an explanation which of those mentioned are subspecies? Because the first one, barbary lion, is a subspecies. Lion is not extinct in the wild, but only one its subspecies. As such the Species header is inaccurate. 85.217.35.50 (talk) 02:58, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Where does it say "Species" in a header? The lede says "species or lower taxa", and under the "Examples" header it says "species and subspecies". -- Donald Albury 15:30, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Somebody just changed it. I think, though, that the IUCN considers some ssubspecies "endangered species". (In the U.S., even populations in a geographic area can be "endangered species".) —innotata 16:01, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That was me. It seemed to me that regardless of whether or not it is technically correct for IUCN, since we are writing for an audience that may not know anything about IUCN, it would not hurt to be a bit more specific. Donlammers (talk) 15:03, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think most people know the distinction between species and subspecies, or get it, and I think the rationale between that concept of "endangered species" is that taxonomic status doesn't matter so much for conservation. Domestic animals[edit]

Are any common domestic animals extinct in the wild? I'm thinking of animals that you would probably not consider rare or endangered when you heard their names, but that only survive in captivity. Rename talk page error[edit]

Seeing that all the other conservation statuses were lower case and it looks like this one was missed, I tried changing this article to lower case. I accidentally did the talk page rather than the article and that worked, but I can't move the article to match it. Now I can't reverse the change I made to the talk page to make it match the article page again. I will do a requested move from Extinct in the Wild to Extinct in the wild to fix this. Extinct in the Wild → Extinct in the wild – Following a conversation at Talk:Conservation status#Capitalisation of conservation statuses also linked to above, all the other conservation statuses were changed to lower case. See: Critically endangered, Not evaluated, etc. It seems appropriate for this page to match those. See section immediately above regarding the talk page.
