They have discovered his remains. They have matched his DNA.

As the man's eyes wandered across the red-rock country of southeastern Utah, he first saw a weather-beaten saddle jammed in a canyon wall crevice and then, behind it, bleached bones sticking out from the earth — the keys to unlocking one of the West's enduring mysteries.

Information on these events were added to the article — but the remains were ultimately found by DNA analysis to not be those of Ruess, and were identified as someone else (information also added by other editors). General Ization ^Talk 05:44, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
