Derk Jan Eppink

I dispute the "facts" based on this person's book. I have not read the book but working on the presentation on Youtube This is at best WP:PRIMARY and cannot be considered WP:RS. Triwbe (talk) 12:54, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

This whole article seems to be a POV attempt to disparage the European Commission staff. No mention is made of The European Parliament, the European Court of Justice or The European Court of Auditors all of which employ people under the same regulations. --Triwbe (talk) 05:12, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Disagree. Eppink is a two-time cabinet secretary. As such he was not a member (i.e not WS:PRIMARY), but definitely in the position to

write about the European Civil Service. In addition, earlier he was a journalist covering Europe for highly valued media

including NRC Handelsblad. That makes Eppink a secondary WP:RS. The linked YouTube video shows Eppink lecturing on a variety of

subjects. This again proves the secondary notion - it's not original research, or his own.

Triwbe, not mentioning the other staff is because I have no data on it. If you have some, please to go ahead and add it. Try to expand it where there is a leaning to one side or the other. Ditto, if you have "positive" information, or a response to DJE's criticism, please add it. But right now we have one good insider source who knows a lot more than we do on the internal working of the Commission. Furthermore, I do not believe DJE himself attempts to disparage EC staff, it is simple a warts and all account of things that go on in so many offices and its rather natural in a way - its not really saying their evil or anything. What we have from him is an insight into the dynamic of the service - yes we need more as it relies a lot on him, but to do that we need more information. So please, if you see it as a big problem, go find some information for us. Number of civil servants per capita per EU Member State?

Hi, with the Greek crisis, we hear that number of civil servants would be excessively high and public services offered of very low quality. But in the media I see very few data on all that's pretended. Can anybody help me find data on this? Thy --SvenAERTS (talk) 09:51, 10 July 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, SvenAERTS. I'm glad you found the reference desk helpful. I've never used it myself. I think we should leave this discussion here, because you never know who else might see it and find out about the reference desk. EU Council DGs

The EU Council also has DGs. Are they also part of the European Civil Service? If so, this article needs to a list of them, and needs to differentiate between Commission and Council DGs. Int21h (talk) 23:14, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

I would understand "European civil service" to mean the body of all (or at least specific types of) servants of the EU institutions -- including the , the European Parliament, etc. I would favour largely restricting this article to issues relating to that body of employees/servants. I would therefore suggest moving information about individual directorates-general, directorates, departments, etc. to the respective institutions. This may necessitate better distinction between the two meanings of "Commission", viz. the College of Commissioners and the institution itself, including its directorates. The same applies mutatis mutandis to the Council. That might mean splitting this article into European civil service (about all EU employees, with reference to the European Union Civil Service Tribunal etc.) and a separate article on the Organization of the European Commission. In any case, I don't think European civil service is a proper name. --Boson (talk) 12:50, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
