Dissertation?[edit]

EDIT: A Masters degree thesis does not constitute a valid Wikipedia source, does it? Theses are not peer reviewed and are typically not subject to the same reviews as journal articles, conference papers, or monographs. I’ve briefly gone through the thesis and it could be that I wasn’t thorough enough, but references to existing literature were sparse throughout the introductory chapter. I definitely recognised some citations from this thesis that should lead back to the original source material in Renfrew Christie, or Conradie and Messerschmidt.

I've checked WP: SCHOLARSHIP - dissertations and theses may be considered primary research. In this case, as I previously stated, the citations should lead back to Christie or Conradie and Messerschmidt. If anyone wants me to fix what can be done, I will. Thanks SmallMossie, please be bold and make the changes. Which reference are you referring to though?--Discott (talk) 06:38, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Discott, unfortunately I'm frequently short on time these days, but it'll definitely be something I'll do as I have the time. The citation that I'm referring to is the dissertation by Holtzhausen. As of the time of writing this comment, it is the 12th citation in the reference list. It seems like an interesting dissertation topic, but it would count as original research under Wikipedia's content guidelines.SmallMossie (talk) 15:38, 8 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi SmallMossie, I am not convinced that it does count as original research. The Holtzhausen disertation is more like a secondary source based on primary sources (interviews and news publications). Typically when Wikipedia refers to "original research" it is talking about Wikipedia editors adding their own research that is then written up and recorded for the first time on Wikipedia its self. In the Holtzhausen case the author has written up and published their research via Stellenbosch University. As such it does not seem to me to be a case of "original research."--Discott (talk) 10:07, 9 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Discott, thinking about it, it is sort of a grey area. In an academic environment, it would be considered a piece of "original research". In the context of Wikipedia's guidelines, the fact that the thesis was deemed suitable as the basis for awarding an MA would, in all likelihood, mean that it is a reliable source. You are correct, it would be either a secondary or tertiary source, since it is comprised of findings made after other primary and secondary sources were agglomerated into a single research document. Having looked at the latest version of the Wikipedia guidelines, it seems to be an acceptable source that could be further reinforced by additional citations.SmallMossie (talk) 15:19, 12 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
