Transfer[edit]

All I can find on his trasfer to Fenerbache are Turkish sources that once translated are nearly impossible to read. Does anybody have any other sources that confirm the move?--Giants27(Contribs|WP:CFL) 14:03, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is useless. I think its false advertising. All these un-official Fenerbache blogs are running around linking all the top players to the club even though they don't have the slightest of chances of signing them. Apparently, Hazard's "manager" went on Turkish radio and said he will be playing in the Turkish league. — Joao10Siamun (talk) 16:37, 27 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lead
  • "In 2005, he ventured to France." That implies it was a risk; consider "he moved to France"?
Done. JSRant Away 03:39, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Personal life
  • "He grew up in a football dominant family." 'Football dominant' isn't a term as far as I'm aware, though I understand what you mean.
  • "Carine, and father,"... Remove apostrophe after Carine.
  • 'most hated rivals'...how about "biggest rivals". 'Hate' is a strong word after all.
  • "On 19 December, Belgian and French media announced that she had given birth to a baby boy", 19 December 2054? 2011?
Done with issues related to Personal life section. JSRant Away 03:39, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Lille
  • Need en dash on three-year.
  • "After-wards, he was relegated back to the amateur level...", Afterwards doesn't need a dash. I would suggest you use another synonym: 'Following the match', 'After the match', 'Subsequently' because 'afterwards' in this case can be misconstrued. Also replace 'relegated' with 'demoted'.
  • "...one goal helping the reserve team finished in fifth place..."; past principle not needed - ...Should be "finish in fifth place".
  • "Hazard finished his amateur career with 11 appearances and one goal helping the reserve..." - put an apostrophe after goal.
Done with issues related to Lille section. JSRant Away 03:39, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
2008–09 season
  • "For the 2008–09 season, Hazard switched to the number 26 shirt"; What was his shirt number before? I would advise you to replace 'switched' with 'given the shirt number 26' as amateur footballers may not have fixed numbers.
  • "His positive performances" → "assured performances"
  • "game-winning goal"... - how about 'match-winning'?
  • "Hazard started eight and contributed to the team finishing in 5th place"...I have no problem with the sentence, just maybe spell out 5th as 'fifth' for consistency perhaps.

2009–10 season
  • "Notable clubs included English clubs..." How about starting off the sentence with "These included English clubs Arsenal..."
  • "A month later, Hazard was instrumental in Lille's 5–1 thrashing of Czech club Slavia Prague as he was partly responsible for the opening goal after slicing through" - replace 'after' with an em dash.
  • "Hazard began the 2009–10 season on a quick note scoring in the Lille's first competitive match of the season"... two things: 1) Replace 'quick' with 'positive' and 2) remove 'the' from Lille; the club's name isn't a definitive article.
  • Derby du Nord has already been wiki linked under 'Personal life'.
  • "The victory helped the club achieve stability in the league by keeping them in the UEFA Champions League places and, also, ended a disaster of a week which saw Lille suffer elimination from both of France's cup competitions." Doesn't make any grammatical sense. I would suggest breaking the sentence into two if you can.
  • "He is the first player, since the award's inception" → "He became the first player since its inception in 1994 to win the award twice."

2010–11 season
  • "Following the international break, Hazard re-captured his scoring form"... Recaptured doesn't need a dash.
  • "Hazard began the 2011 portion of the season"... Ambiguous. What defines a portion in a league season? More so, a year? Consider "At the turn of the calander year, Hazard began...".
  • "...Lille eight points clear as league leader in the table" → "...Lille eight points clear at the top of the league table."
Done with issues related to 2010–11 season section. JSRant Away 03:39, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
2011–12 season
  • "Three days later" → How about "Three days after"
  • "Fours days later" → "Four days later"
  • "In his second career Champions League appearance"...I'm not sure if it's necessary to mention that. Maybe "Against Turkish outfit Trabzonspor on [insert month and date], Hazard assisted Lille's only goal..."
  • "game-winning goal" → how about 'match-winning'?
  • "Due to his increase participation with Lille's first team"...'Due to' is used in the previous sentence. Rephrase.

Chelsea[edit]

Eden Hazard himself has announced that he signed on for Chelsea, so it isn't simply a rumour. It thus needs to be mentioned. The edit I did also clearly states that it was Hazard who announced it, I'll add to it that Chelsea has neither confirmed nor denied it yet, but at this stage it would be very surprising if the deal didn't go through or either Hazard or Chelsea reneges... -- fdewaele, 29 May 2012.

Even if it does not come to completion, it is still worthy of inclusion that player himself legitimately announced his intention to sign for Chelsea. Whether he signs for them, the deal falls through, or he changes his mind, this is noteworthy enough to document. If he signs, it's interesting that even at such a young age, he personally announced it before either club could confirm, and it's a curious spectacle that he chose to announce it via twitter, which is growing in prominence. If he doesn't sign, it's a spectacle because he puts himself in a potentially tenuous relationship with the Lille squad/fans he might remain with, or be accused of using a possible Chelsea transfer to encourage other suitors to up their offers.
I'm all for Wikipedia not being a rumor mill. This might not be an official signing, but it is not a transfer column rumor - the player has literally announced he will sign with Chelsea. Slow Graffiti (talk) 00:01, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Current club is not Chelsea 13. June[edit]

I don't believe his current club status should be Chelsea. The English transfer window opens on the 1. July as specified in the wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transfer_window. Quote:

'Although, in England, the transfer window formally opens on 1 July, transfers between clubs in the same association can take place as soon as the last competitive fixtures for the season have been played.

This clearly states that transfers between Premiership clubs is allowed at the end of the season, but not with clubs abroad as this is only allowed as of the 1. July.

Response to not completeing the request to change his club status to Lille. WOW wikipedia sure is a unrealiable source then. How can one article state that the transfer window is closed until the 1. July when another article can claim that it's possible to transfer before? There is no consensus then... The french article says nothing about when the transfer will go trough it only says something about the deal complete which is a whole different story.

official website page - correction needed[edit]

Hi, I noticed the edenhazard.com is listed as "official website", but this is not really correct. Eden Hazard only has a facebook page. And until very recently this was a very dead site. Could you add this Eden Hazard website to external links? http://www.edenhazard.es This website exists since 2010 already, before he was well known, and except this great wikipedia page we have been the only ones writing a website about him since 2 years. We recently migrated to wordpress, so several older articles (2011-2009) are also to be published very soon. And yes, I did expect him to end up in Spain...smiley. the .com was already taken by Sedo.com who just try to make profit by selling it to the highest bidder. I should have reported this earlier, I guess. Thank you.

Muslim? Probably not.[edit]

Some internet rumours pretend that Eden Hazard would be Muslim. We cannot look into his brain of course, but it seems more likely that this is not the case:

  • He never openly expressed or confirmed this faith.
  • He most certainly is not a devout Muslim (as express.co.uk wrote in 2013 and Daily Mail in 2014); he did not refuse a taste of champaign (read: "alcohol") in a 2015 celebration and not any Belgian catched a glimpse of him being a practicing Muslim.
  • Neither his wife neither his children have Arab names; of course this is no foolproof argument, but it makes it only less likely.
  • Recently (2013/14) he wished people both a happy Ramadan AND a merry Christmas.

As long as he does not openly practice religion or makes any statements on religion we simply do not know. Before that we cannot put a statement about his religion at his WP article.

Kareldorado (talk) 22:55, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: Some claim his facial hairgrowth indicates Islamic belief, but they should realise that many men shave their head without being Buddhist. Kareldorado (talk) 08:57, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Eden/Edin is a common bosnian muslim name. Many players are of muslim bosnian background for example Zlatan Ibrahimovic & Edin Džeko. Why does dailymail label him muslim if he is not? Muslims dont need to have arabic names. FYI the 2013 express article actually calls him a devout muslim see here [8] Lagoonaville Lagoonaville (talk) 23:52, 16 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for your response. I do not proclaim that I have the proof that he would not be Muslim. True, Eden/Edin is common for (Muslim) Bosnians but essentially Eden is a Hebrew name and it is therefore also used in other religions. Compare it with Yusuf (Arab) vs. Joseph (Christian), which are essentially the same names. I know that the Express in 2013 called him devout (perhaps the way I wrote it down was not so clear; I meant "contrarily to 'devout', what express.co.uk wrote"). And of course, Muslims do not need to be given Arab names at birth - however, it is done commonly. As I already wrote: I have no foolproof argument for him not being Muslim, but can find few convincing arguments why he would be. Regards, Kareldorado (talk) 09:58, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding these two newspapers: I am also asking myself on what primary source they based themselves. Kareldorado (talk) 10:06, 17 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Religion[edit]

I have good primary sources as to Hazard being a Muslim, so please stop removing it.

Which then? Kareldorado (talk) 20:13, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Please base this discussion on verifiablity, and nothing else. A primary source is not required; to the contrary, we usually prefer secondary sources. Unless we have a very good reason to believe that reliable secondary sources are incorrect, or that the sources provided are not reliable, it's not appropriate to remove sourced content because it "isn't true". The threshold for inclusion is verifiability, not truth. That is how we operate. It appears that the content being added can be verified with reliable sources. If there's conflicting information, we can specify that "According to Source A he is a Muslim". Please continue this discussion here. Swarm X 21:14, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can follow your thoughts, thanks for trying to help us out Swarm, but I have not a clue why these sources mentioned this. I would also like to refer to Russell's teapot, with Hazard's religion as the teapot. Kareldorado (talk) 21:29, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe more correct would be to say in the article: "Hazard never openly expressed a religious belief. According to some journalists, he is Muslim." Kareldorado (talk) 21:29, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I would like add that indeed, the sources cannot receive the label "reliable" in this context. The two involved papers belong to popular press and, more important, don't carry arguments to defend their claims. The very good reasons to doubt their claims of Hazard being a 'devout Muslim' can be found above. Kareldorado (talk) 16:25, 29 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Exxcalibur808 (talk) 23:40, 29 March 2015 (UTC)I'm a new user and I'm also baffled as to why Hazard's page as been edited to suggest he's in any way shape or form, a Muslim or even a religious person at all. Muslims don't drink alcohol, even nominal Muslims don't drink alcohol in public. Basing a source on Daily Mail and Express articles (two of the most unreliable papers in Britain, and both papers seem to be copying each other) makes no sense. The article Why even mention his religion at all when there is no evidence from the player suggesting he is? No Belgian paper has ever even made the connection between "Hazard" and "Muslim" and as for facial hair? That's silly. He just caught it off in the last game. Muslims are not the only ones who grow out their facial hair, you, know. Both of his parents are Catholic, and so are his youngest brothers. "Eden" is absolutely NOT a Muslim name, where is this nonsense coming from? Anyway, I suggest it's in the best interest for the credibility of wikipedia to remove any hypothetical guesses for Hazard's religion until solid evidence is produced, i.e from the player himself, or from a public action, i.e Hazard doing a Muslim prayer. Exxcalibur808 (talk) 23:40, 29 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence was that Hazard hasn't mentioned his religion ever, but the Daily Mail thinks he might be Muslim. Sounds like speculative rubbish to me. The Daily Mail is not a reliable source. If he wanted people to talk about his religion, he would have mentioned it to someone somewhere. Speculative religion-guessing is not acceptable for Wikipedia. Joseph2302 (talk) 00:12, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Exxcalibur808 (talk) 00:31, 30 March 2015 (UTC)The so-called "article" on the Daily Mail was written by a guy, John Hall, who isn't even a sports journalist, further lending less credence to his claims. There is simply no way a Global news writer "focusing on the Islamic State" could be privy to the religious convictions of a soccer player. He probably just pulled it from a dubious places (express, a well known rag in England) on the internet and mentioned Hazard's name. It's the Daily Mail, afterall. Exxcalibur808 (talk) 00:31, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Eden Hazard is NOT muslim.[edit]

All the Evidenence points to Eden NOT being Muslim, His parents names, his siblings names, His childrens names, pictures of him drinking, partying, some articles in a few papers got it wrong. He is not a muslim, and his family and himself would be highly offended, if not consider it SLANDER, to label him as such. I Suggest any trace of religion is removed untill he HIMSELF declares what he is.

There is a high spate of muslims labelling famous people muslim, when it turns out they are not, Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, e.t.c This is innacurate and not suitable for an informative site such as wikipedia. Jai Tabasco (talk) 09:58, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I also really don't think so, but more correct is to say that for the moment there is not any good reason to assume Hazard is Muslim (please see my discussion above). Stating that he is, is mere speculation and should not take place at Wikipedia. Kareldorado (talk) 13:29, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

International appearance count unclear[edit]

In the note, it says "^ Hazard cap against Luxembourg on 26 May 2014 was counted by RBFA but not officially recognised by FIFA due to an excessive number of substitutions according to the Laws of the Game.".

"Widely considered as one of the best players in the world"[edit]

Tbh, i dont think this applies anymore and is outdated, the way he's playing this season. Should probably be deleted or the "widely" replaced with something else. Urgal (talk) 01:10, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hazard has suffered 12 documented medical injuries ranging from fractures to muscular injuries. It's not that he all of a sudden became a bad player. The context of the phrasing of "was considered" doesn't even make sense in light of the sources cited. Which is why a more encompassing desciption of his "generation" makes more sense than "in the world" today.

Exxcalibur808 (talk) 22:10, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Even though his performance at Real Madrid has dropped he is still one of the best players Chelsea ever had so maybe that could be stated? Ex: “During his time at Chelsea FC he was considered one of the best players in the world”

I don’t think removing the statement that he is/was one of the best players in the world/of his generation is a good idea.

Many coaches and players spoke highly of his time at Chelsea and was often considered the best player in the Premier League at the time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:A020:82:66D3:DC6E:D330:8743:60F4 (talk) 07:52, 27 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

but the word "is" isn't true. and from Chelsea to all the world is a bug step. we could easily find better players that have shown same level over longer times. hazard started getting overweighted and sticking to the money in Madrid.
Chelsea was in that times buying titles. so it wasn't to hard to be a better player hab others when the team can lift you up. how many cl titles did he receive playing actively? hmmmm 182.239.115.203 (talk) 12:59, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I think there should be a record section to his page, as there is with players like Mo Salah. You could include records such as he is Lilles youngest ever goalscorer, Ligue Uns youngest PotY winner, etc 51.219.209.114 (talk) 09:40, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm I guess ur right, but when you look at records sections of other players such as Mo Salah, a lot of those records are very trivial but are still on the list. I dont know though, think it would be good to add some records somewhere TJarrrett (talk) 22:33, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
