Synonyms[edit]
Mgiganteus: Yes, Cephbase does only include O. punctatus as a synonym for O. rubescens, but Cephbase is incomplete. F.G. Hochberg in "Taxonomic Atlas of the benthic fauna of the Santa Maria Basin and Western Santa Barbara Channel" Vol 8: The mollusca pt1. does a more in-depth taxonomic review of O. rubescens and includes many of those I included as synonyms. The remainder is Octopus pricei (Berry, 1913) which was included in Hochberg, 1997 (as found in the article refs) as a synonym. Yes, many of these synonyms are in common with E. dofleini. This is because many of Berry's formal descriptions from 1911-1913 included individuals of both species. - In that case several synonyms are listed on both the E. dofleini article and this one. This might be confusing to readers. Maybe you could add a note to the article explaining the taxonomic situation? Apologies for being so hasty in removing your additions; this is a very good article!
