Other Douglass families[edit]

Frederick Douglass is, by no means, the only Douglass family, and so this article needs to be either renamed or changed in some way. Family trees are often included in the main page and this may be the best way forward. Shipsview (talk) 17:20, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Other than Douglas (family), which redirects to Clan Douglas, I don't see any other articles that interfere with this title. If another "Douglass family" article is created, then there can be a discussion of which article, if any, is primary. - Donald Albury 18:42, 29 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There are many Douglas and Douglass families, so yo usurp the title for just one of them makes no sense. Shipsview (talk) 17:38, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please see the policy on Article titles, and in particular the requirement to keep titles concise. If another "Douglass family" article is created in Wikipedia, and found notable to be retained, then there will be a discussion as to whether one subject or the other (or neither) is primary, and the non-primary article(s) will have a disambiguater added. But, until there is more than one contender for a title, there is no reason to disambiguate it. - Donald Albury 14:35, 15 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As suggested by the Douglas (surname) and Douglass articles, there are numerous Douglas/Douglass families in Scotland and the US that could have their own articles. Further, there is a published Douglas genealogy (Douglas Genealogy: The Descendants of John Douglas of Middleborough of Middleborough, Massachusetts, the First of This Branch in America) that lays claim to a specific branch being established in the US in the early 1700s. And a different John Douglass came to Maryland in 1645. I agree with Shipsview that a Douglass family article on a single branch does not seem logical, but I'm not sure how to proceed. Would it make sense to create a Douglass Families (plural) article that then branches to, say, Frederick Douglass family, John Douglass family, and so on? Or should Douglass Families be a disambiguation page instead of an article? Jeremy Butler (talk) 11:30, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Until another article that meets notability and verifiability requirements is created that could logically be called "Douglass family", the current title of this article is correct (see Article titles). If another Douglass family article is created, there will need to be a discussion on whether one or the other is primary. The primary article, if there is one, will use the "Douglass family" title, while the other article will be disambiguated. If it is decided that neither article is primary, then both articles will be disambiguated. While biographical articles may briefly mention some genealogical information, an article on a family name (such as House of Wettin) that did not include multiple notable (i.e, with WP articles) persons would not conform to policies and quidelines. - Donald Albury 14:21, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
