Untitled[edit]

"Yen has displayed notable skills in MM, being well-versed in boxing, kickboxing, taekwondo, Muay Thai, wrestling, karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu." This is unclear. Does the writer know what MMA is? MMA a combat sport built around a rule set. Having experience in numerous martial arts as far as I am aware does not make one a MMA fighter/well versed in MMA. Does anyone disagree? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.103.154.217 (talk) 16:55, 17 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dicussion on the usage of Drunken Tai Chi[edit]

I'm very much confused the 3rd paragraph. There's a couple of sentences that talk about Donnie's movie, Xiao Tai Ji. The next sentence says the movie's Wushu style is named Drunken Tai Chi. The problem is the name. There appears to be two translations for the movie title.

The first one is the literal translation, which is "Laughing Tai Chi".The second which is "Drunken Tai Chi". I've been trying to find out which version of the translation is a more accurate translation. Because of the two translatios, one could see that the movie could mean two different things, because "laughing" doesn't necessarly equate to being drunk.

Maybe I'm reading too much into the translations, but it is something to think about and have some discussion. Rayghost (talk) 13:50, 23 March 2008 (UTC)rayghost[reply]

"Drunken Tai Chi" is what it was called when released in North America, and may or may not be a translation of its Chinese title. LycanFury09 (talk) 06:53, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Filmography incomplete[edit]

I know for a fact that Donnie Yen was in Iron Monkey II. I also remember it being listed in the filmography before. Why was it removed?LycanFury09 (talk) 06:53, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Objectivity[edit]

Parts of this article read more like a PR release than an entry in an encyclopedia. The "Real fighting experience and prowess" section is probably the worst affected by this:

He was a very curious teenager who sought to exchange martial arts knowledge with people from different martial arts backgrounds, which led to him gaining profound knowledge in practical martial arts and having a reputation as a street brawler.

etc.

I would suggest removing the affected sections, most of them are not referenced either.

US-centric and inconsistency[edit]

Hello - one editor is insisting on edits such as this: [1] Issues with this are:

  • There are many places called Boston, and in different countries. (And it appears the one referred to here is not even the original.)
  • Lack of internal consistency as, for example, the preceding sentence notes Guangzhou, China. (and the info. box already lists Guangzhou is in China)
  • The claim that Boston should not have its country listed whilst another city (which is very large and very well known) should looks suspiciously like US centrism.
  • No reason has been given why the country for this Boston should not be listed.

So, there are 3 viable options: ‘Guangzhou and Boston’, or ‘Guangzhou, China and Boston, US’ or ‘Guangzhou, Guangdong and Boston, Massachusetts’. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 42.106.8.141 (talk) 14:54, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@42.106.8.141: I decided to avoid the inconsistencies altogether and reword the sentence so both the United States and Boston flow naturally, if you're good with that. Yeenosaurus (talk) 🍁 00:15, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, just introducing myself and apologising for causing any trouble regarding this article on Donnie Yen.[edit]

I have made edits to several articles only as of this and last year (Squid Game, Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun and Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim, and also the two parents of the plant.) Just notifying that 2406:3003:2060:26CE:CD4F:1136:84D1:24F6, 2406:3003:2060:26CE:94F5:C8DB:4BE7:40AE and 2406:3003:2060:26CE:B9D5:B1D5:F4AF:3CEC are all me on different devices for people's information. Sorry for not making an account, I felt that I could contribute to Wikipedia where I could without having to use an account and I didn't want to add to the accounts I have to handle. As for my edits, most of you people may notice in my logs that my edits mostly revolve around replacing the words "for-" and "can't/don't rem-" (as in synonymous with "don't recall" or "slipped my mind"). This is due to my personal phobia, athazagoraphobia (please search it up, because I may trigger myself by explaining anywhere beyond stating it has to do with fear of memory deterioration), and subsequent OCD (compounded with Asperger's syndrome). I made such an edit in this article but I wasn't trying to convey that Mike Tyson actively disregarded the choreography rather than switching from "actor" to "boxer" and getting aggressive. If that was why this article became protected, as well as receiving edits by registered editors after my edit, I sincerely apologise for the trouble. I cannot guarantee I will not make more of such edits, but I hope I can also replace said words appropriately so as to ensure the meaning remains unchanged. I would also like to collaborate with more recognised/registered editors and I hope this community can understand where I'm coming from. Thank you if you read and acknowledged this. In future, should this be required, you may address me as Mahek for convenience's sake (part of my usual gaming and unofficial username). I hope this can make conversations and discussions between us easier. I hope I didn't offend anyone in this post.

Zhang Weili's MMA Segment Placement[edit]

In the second paragraph of this article, Chinese UFC athlete Zhang Weili is mentioned in the 3rd sentence, and this sentence just generally feels randomly inserted: Yen is one of Hong Kong's top action stars.[5] Yen is widely credited for bringing mixed martial arts (MMA) into the mainstream Asian cinema by choreographing MMA in many of his films since the early 2000s. The first Chinese UFC champion Zhang Weili states that Yen's films introduced her to MMA. Perhaps this piece of information can be put in a section where it is talking about Donnie Yen's influences. I don't know, it just feels weird to read; all these sentences on Donnie Yen as an overview and then suddenly a sentence on Zhang. Patton84 (talk) 23:21, 27 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese American[edit]

Should Donnie Yen be referred to as Chinese American in the lead? He no longer holds American citizenship, nor does he live there. Yeeno (talk) 21:56, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hong Kong citizenship[edit]

The article states that Yen had Hong Kong citizenship from 1963, but the source cited doesn't. It is unlikely he had Hong Kong citizenship at birth since he was born in mainland China to mainland parents, according to Hong Kong nationality law. He for sure had Chinese citizenship until he naturalized as American, when he must have resigned Chinese citizenship, as per Chinese nationality law, which doesn't allow double citizenship. The manner in which Yen acquired Hong Kong citizenship in order to give up his American one is opaque, but this article doesn't reflect that. Please remove the Hong Kong citizenship from 1963 to when he acquired American citizenship, and replace for Chinese citizenship. 213.143.51.81 (talk) 08:23, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Claim that "Yen Once Sent 8 Men to the Hospital for Harassing His Girlfriend at a Club"[edit]

There's this repeated claim that I found no hard evidence for beyond weak references. It was once present in this article but removed. In case someone finds it back here again here's what little I found.

One sample: DONNIE YEN’S LEGENDARY STREET FIGHT: FACT OR FICTION?

The above article's TLDR: We can't verify for sure how it exactly happened since it was a long time ago but little evidence tells us "something" did happen.

Now that won't do to justify its addition here even if we were to be considerate and say it "may" have happened vaguely. That would just be WP:BLPGOSSIP. This looks like a case of WP:EXCEPTIONAL. Ugog Nizdast (talk) 13:35, 26 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Settled in "Boston"[edit]

If he indeed settled in Boston, then why did he attend Newton North High School, which only services Newton? Does the source mean the Greater Boston Area? I find it hard to believe that he settled in Boston proper at 11 and attended Newton North High School at 14, unless he moved from Boston to Newton in the meantime.
